Yay new computer!

Well, after I messed up the HDD in my AMD K6-2 (500mhz) we got this Intell Pent. II (333mhz) and this is slow. So today my dad randomly says "lets buy a new computer." So we go on ebay and start looking around and came across this:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 DUAL CORE 4200+ (4.4Ghz, 2000mhz FSB)

2GB of DDR-2 RAM

64MB On-board graphics (Could've gone to GeForce 7300GS.... but I wasn't sure, and that money went to another gig of RAM)

160GB HDD

And some other little stuff. Everything for pretty much $450.... already put together, just need to get an OS. Good buy?

Haha, thanks. It should be here pretty soon.. it's only up in Ohio. Hopefully I'll be able to get a nice graphics card and be able to play some games for once.

Just a few questions though..

1. What should I do for system security? I don't want Norton or Mcafee, or anything that's going to slow me down... even though I think that's the least of my worries.

2. Is partioning hard? After the last HDD incident, I think it'd be nice to be able to do.

No, not so bad. New hard drives should come w/ software & used ones have it at the makers' website. Would recomend

2 things to save alot of trouble.

1 - Wipe & reload, best way to get rid of any nasties left over from the previous owner. The last used box I got turned out to be the house usage box for lan parties & unprotected surfing. A bit of code buried in the OS kept sending it to really bad porn sites (REALLY bad). It's like if you dated a hooker (but I know you wouldn't because you have standards but if you did), you tell her " your cute & all but we're going to the car wash first.

2 - Get a 40 -80 gig drive & install it as a boot drive (C:), w/ your operating system. Use the 160 gig as the data (D:) to install your backups, games & MP3s/video files etc..

Enjoy, I'll catch up one of these days.

EDIT : Right now I'm running XP Pro w/ service pack 2 (appears to finally be fixed) & AVG Free, from AVG site.

Or maybe Kaspersky Internet Security and HijackThis; Kaspersky's not really for free but it's a bit more decent, while HijackThis can be useful especially if you're not a noob when it comes to fixing stuff...

What's "hijackthis"?

For all of you noobs out there, here's the Wikipedia article about HijackThis:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HijackThis

Basically, it makes a log of all the running processes in your system. You submit the log to a tech support forum, who will tell you if a certain process (exe, dll, tracking cookie, whatever) is rouge or not. You can download it here or in Trend Micro's HijackThis page (Trend Micro bought the app recently). If you use it, upload the log here and we'll see...
