Jack Thompson!

Recommended Posts

Guess who's back? Back again? Jack is back; tell a friend. As expected, Jack Thompson has emerged from the underside of whatever rock he's been hiding under for the past few years, just in time to go after Grand Theft Auto IV for -- guess what? -- excessive sexual content in Grand Theft Auto IV.

As noted in a recent Ars Technica article, Wacky Jacky has an "unlikely" bit of ammo for his case against GTA IV: a video, produced by IGN, highlighting the strip clubs and prostitutes that exist in Grand Theft Auto IV. For some ungodly reason, though, IGN seems to have thought it was a good idea to make a four minute video out of it, showing Niko and his "encouters" followed by him hunting down the ladies shortly thereafter.

From the Ars Technica article:

The embattled Florida attorney has written a letter to the US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, R. Alexander Acosta, demanding that legal action be taken against Take Two and retailers for selling the game...

Thompson sent a copy of the letter to Ars Technica, and his demands are far-reaching. "Indictments should be returned against Take Two corporately and its Chairman, Strauss Zelnick, along with other Take Two officers. Indictment should also be against Sony and Microsoft which are making this pornographic game available to minors, and openly so, on their PS3 and Xbox systems," Thompson wrote. "Further, indictments should be handed down against Wal-Mart, Best Buy, GameStop, and all other retailers distributing this game to minors at their retail stores, openly, to kids who are only seventeen."

He then compares the game to, of all things, polio. "Grand Theft Auto IV is the gravest assault upon children in this country since polio. We now have vaccines for that virus... The 'vaccine' that must be administered by the United States government to deal with this virtual virus of violence and sexual depravity is criminal prosecutions of those who have conspired to do this. If you doubt me, look at the aforementioned streaming audio/video. It will make you sick."

While I'm certainly no fan of Jack Thompson or his ridiculous antics (and I'd love to argue the point that "innocent 17 year olds" are only a year away from being legally able to engage in such lude acts on camera for money... or in some cases, poorly-made t-shirts), it's hard to blame the man when IGN practically hands him a gift-wrapped video of inevitable controversy. Really... what the hell is IGN thinking by producing a video like this, removing all contextual elements of the game, and having Niko engage prostitutes and then hunt them down?

While it's unlikely that those in a position of authority will do much of anything in response to Jack's complaint, there's no doubt that the controversy will continue as we get further into the summer months. As usual, you can expect us to keep you updated on whatever whimsical nonsense spews forth from the great gooey geyser that is mainstream media.

Like said, IGN WTF.

Shouldn't it be our opinion if it is too graphical seems that we are the people who see it and play it? It dosen't concern him at all. Where not his kids!!!!

True he and those other anti-GTA, absurd, people should just shut up! :nope: Stop blaming GTA and the game, without violence in GTA it wouldn't be the same. Forget IGN.

If you don't think the game's appropriate for your kids, don't let them play it. How much more simple could it be?

If one wants to argue that kids will do it anyway, why is this any different than X-rated videos, magazines, drugs or alcohol?

...Sony and Microsoft are making this pornographic game available to minors...

FFS will this guy not just contract AIDS & die already. I saw the vid a few days ago & to be honest I've seen more flesh in a shower gel comercial, how he has the audacity to call it pornagraphic is beyond me. Besides which, GTA doesn't even get near the levels of sexual gratuity seen in some mainstream films (Last Tango in Paris anyone?).

GTA IV has been rated M, what more can R* do? Like Strip Poker or Erotic Monopoly just because it's a game doesn't mean it's suitable for kids. I hope that Take-Two or R* counter claim for harrassment & get him busted. While they're at it, I think the cops should check his basement for any kids he might be trying to "keep safe" from this moraly bankrupt game.

Honestly these are gaming consoles. If someone wanted to make a sex game, then they should be able to. The way it is right now is how it should stay: if the rating on the box says you have to be a certain age to buy it, well then you have to be a certain age to buy it. It comes down to if the employees at the game stores are carding or not. If little brother hops on and heres fuck and shit, and sees a stripper in a thong, well then thats mommys fault. The same as if little brother finds daddys whiskey and his brothers pot.

It blows my mind that there is some deusche bag in a suit who is livid about a game. The guy needs to look at himself in the mirror, and reevaluate his life. He is not going to win any lawsuit. The game obviously made its way through the proper channels and filters in order to become a game, so I doubt there will be any case.

Besides I've been listening to gangster rap, watching action flicks, and playing games like GTA all my life and I am yet to kill someone or do drugs. Well, actually, scratch that 2nd part.

Agreed. I agree on the fact that Mr. Thompson needs to look at himself and think about it; it's not that we want him to die or something, but this guy needs some reform. I played GTA because I want to explore (at least in a small screen), not to have Hot Coffee with some girl...

Well, if we show the world that we want him to die, then he'll harass us more... I do loathe him, much like the rest of you...

I don't really wish he was dead, but if he were to fall in front of a procession of steam rollers, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Besides, wishing that death finds him swiftly, does not re-enforce his arguement that GTA insights violent behaviour.

If I said that I want to drag him kicking & screaming from his vehicle, flambe him with a molotov cocktail then head of for a celebratory lapdance, you might have a point.

This guy, what can I say he just needs to shut up man. You'd think he has better things to do than blame games, namely GTA, for the problems of the world. Go play catch with your son or something. I'm sure he has neglected to spend time with the tike, what with being so concerned with what Rockstar is doing. Poor kid.

He should stop trying! If he doesnt like the girls then the hell with him he like a fly! If he keeps doing this i bet the judge wont let him back in the courtroom to keep protesting and filing law suits. Also i think most people under 18 is wit ther eparents and if they wanted to hot coffe a girl their parents would stop them.

YET he blames Rockstar or Take2 and tries to bring them down!!! Attack the retailers. The game doesn't sell itself! It's been through the ratings system already so no amount of complaining is going to change their minds. Take2 should sue his ass off!
