Can my PC run GTA IV?

Recommended Posts

Here's my friend other very unbalanced PC:

ATI Radeon HD 4870

750GB SATA HDD

4GB RAM

And the weak link:

Intel Pentium-D @ 2.0 GHz

Will it run?

I think not, without a new CPU, but I'm hoping it'll still work because of the massive GPU and RAM.

can this play it, my wants borrow it now, (this is gonna run out my install count :bashhead: ) but ill let him anyway, cuz i owe him 1

Phenom II X4 920

8 GB RAM

GeForce GTX 260 896 MB

vista home premium sp1

Umm yeah, that definetly can run it. But there are also other factors that will determine your performance such as: HDD (Should be at least 320GB SATA II), Motherboard, (As long as it's good quality) and although in very minor amounts, RAM Speed.

I'm having some issues with the game.

My specs are as follows:

4GB DDR2 RAM

Hyperthreaded P4 @ 3.00GHz

Diamond Radeon HD4670 (1GB DDR3 version)

WINXP x32 SP3

Even at the lowest game settings, it doesn't seem to keep up. I'd say it is barely tolerable.

The only thing I can think of is that I'm running dual monitors and maybe that has something to do with it? The game only plays on one of them (at 1280x976)

In the memory usage section, under max everything, it says I'm using 839 of 999MB.

Looking at the specs comparing the video card I have to the nVidia Geforce 9600GT, it looks like my card has ~28.8GB/sec memory bandwidth and the 9600GT has 56GB/s transfer rate. I'm also not positive that my PCI-e slot is x16, it might be x8, which would half the bandwidth right there. Could that be it?

What gives?

The game IS pegging out my processor. It runs @ 95% and in the 10 minutes I played, climbed some 15 degrees F.

Input?

Yeah, the x8 is a problem, could be dragging you down a bit.

And yeah, your processor doesn't even meet the minimum requirement. First off, it's a Pentium, and a 3.0GHz P4 ~ 2.1GHz Core 2 Solo.

So basically, you have a 2.1GHz Core 2 SINGLE-CORE, and the requirement is a 1.8GHz Core 2 DUAL CORE, or basically a 5.0GHz P4 SINGLE CORE.

So yeah, your processor is DEFINETLY holding you back. As I say to others, also make sure that you have a decent HDD (SATA), good speed RAM (800), good cooling, a decent mobo, etc., because even those can make a pretty good difference.

Thanks Raybob,

I have been considering getting a new mobo and processor.

I was thinking about the i7 920 or 940. Any opinion on either? The 940 is $$$ compared to the 920. Is a quad-core 2.66GHz sufficient, or would the 2.93GHz be better suited?

I also plan on using WinXP Ori x64 and 12GB of 1066 RAM with the new mobo setup

I've got a 400GB 7200RPM main harddrive (WD Caviar) and a 1.5Tb 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda backup.

What do you think?

All sounds good except for two things.

One, XP 32 is great, but XP 64 has VERY VERY little support, for 64-bit people, I'd say Vista.

2, the 940 is definetly not worth $300 over the 920. The 920 is OC able to over 3.6GHz easily with a decent mobo and good air cooling. The 940 really doesn't good any farther, and the bus speed/ cache isn't even any different.

EDIT: Also don't forget that with an i7, you MUST have DDR3 memory.

I'd recommend these: (Make sure your Mobo has 6 DIMM slots)

I may end up buying a Dell Studio XPS 435.

Specs look good:

i7 920

6GB DDR3-1066

750GB 7200RPM SATA HDD

HD4850 w/ 512mb

Not a bad overall setup. Plus it saves me time.

How much does that cost from dell? (Remember tax and shipping) You could easily get that for under $2,000 including monitor, mouse, keyboard, transfer software, and OS if you built it. It only takes like an hour or two, and it's really not very hard to learn. Plus you can pay others to do it for like $20.

$952.94 with tax. Not buying from DELL, but an authorized DELL distributor and I have a coupon.

I don't need a monitor (I have two), or a Keyboard/Mouse (I have a Logitech MX5500).

The way I priced it all out, it would be almost exactly the same price to buy a 920, a motherboard, RAM, a copy of Vista x64, and a case/psu. This way, I can simply transfer my two hard drives (my 400GB 7200RPM SATA drive, and my 1.5Tb 7200RPM SATA drive plus the 750GB 7200RPM drive it comes with) and be good to go.

There's no tax on Newegg.

And what mobo did you choose? Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R is one of the best.

I'm thinking of buying a new rig for me to tinker with, with these specs:

Phenom X3 8650 2.3Ghz

Asus M2N-VM

Transcend/ Apacer 2GB 667 / 800 ddr2

250gb Seagate Barracuda SATA 8mb

Inno3D 9800GT 1gb ddr3 2dvi 256bit

Imaster SLI 600w PSU

Will this run GTA IV decently? My budget is around 500 to 600 dollars, or Php 25k...

It'll definetly run it, but not the best at medium settings. I suggest more RAM, and even though it's not required, a 32MB Cache SATA HDD would do you go.

Like 3 GB or something? By the way, I'm running on Windows 7 Ultimate.

Well like I said, it'll definetly run it with 2GB, but 3GB will definetly increase your performance some.

Raybob's Recommendations:

Vista SP1/ XP SP3/ Windows 7

Core 2 Duo E8400/ Core 2 Quad Q6600/ AMD Phenom X4 >2.4GHz

4GB DDR2 >800 RAM for Vista, 3GB for XP

NVIDIA 9600GT/ Radeon HD 4670 (Preferrably 9800GT or 4850)

SATA HDD w/ >16MB Cache

Gigabyte P45/ X58 Motherboard is optimum

A PSU that won't cause problems

A bit too unbalanced; the video card's way too weak to run that game properly. Anyone running IV on a PC with an 8500 or below may experience low performance, although this also depends on some other factors such as CPU, RAM, etc.
