GTA IV vs Saints Row 2

Recommended Posts

This is Saints Row 2 trailer and i have to say it hits the nail on the head.

I really miss base jumping in IV. And TBH i've gone on only one date (boring as hell) and i've never went anywhere with my "friends". So what it gives me the "thumbs down". If R* had made dating and activities with friends mandatory I would've thrown the game out of my window the day I got it.I don't need a videogame to do boring stuff.

eDIT: I'm posting this cause SR2 came out on PC jan 5th, and i'm about to get it.

Personally I think that the games are made for different audiences, GTA I think is for more mature players, who still enjoy R* comic genius, however from what I have heard saints row is more of a game where you can mess around like in previous GTAs and leaves the realistic touch of IV and is more of a game where you want to play like a 5 year old.

Don't, it's a shitty port, for why see this post. If you're going to get the game, you better have a computer built by God himself or at least get it for a console.

I don't have a console. And your problem might be the videocard and vista. ATI Radeon videocards are known to have these kind of issues with some games, but i'm guessing here. As for the non-existing support for 16:10 and 16:9 resolutions, man that sucks, since i have 1680x1050 native res too (20"). Usually these guys come up with a solution for games like that.

My rig is:

Intel core 2 duo 3 GHz processor

Nvidia 8800 GT 512 MB videocard

2 GB RAM

XP SP3 OS

I might still give iSR2 a try though. This guy's SR2 review is worth watching, he reviewed GTAIV too, check it out.

I've found chris82 tends to know what he's talking about so if he says don't waste your $$$ he's probably right.

Stick w/ the console versions until they fix it for PC, this one sounds like another Scarface (love the game, hate the

glitches). X360 version is fairly stable, only locks up occasionally on sidework or during cutscenes in co-op. Multi-player

is okay.

In view of the recent release of a PC version the video is relevant again as some people have no interest in consoles.

So.. then saint's row is GTA's younger, pre pubescent brother?

I've never spent longer working on a metaphor, please laugh.

Does look quite lulzy to throw people in front of crap. Shame about the reported shitty port quality.

Ha, I laughed. Not with the video, but at it. It's quite a childish game, really. And I find it funny that the are running down watching tv in a videogame, when THEIR game has a game inside it. So wait, watching tv in a video game is lame, but playing a game in a game isn't? Wow. They show off GTA IV's boring aspects((and make them seem more boring)), while showing off "fun"((albeit childish)) aspects of SR2 that have NOTHING to do with the aspects they are comparing them to.

But nice try, anyways.

Of course they don't, why would they? The purpose of this video is to show the contrast between ''fun'' and ''boring'' in both games.

SR is crap, GTA4 is much better, and the dates are optional, as is everything else. You only have to do 1 date in the whole game, and that's it. I'm sure someone will mod GTA4 to include parachutes and other things, but clearly that won't be good enough for you, either. And Spider-Vice, you're right, the graphics are absolute dogshit.

You have no idea what you're talking about. I am sick of you people talking shit about Vista. There is nothing wrong with Vista. It is perfectly fine for games and the difference between Vista and XP is negligible.

So next you choose to make the absurd claim that ATi Radeon cards are known to have "these" kinds problems with "some" games. Explain to me how the hell video cards which are MADE to play games on would have issues with playing games? If that were true than the 4850 wouldn't beat the shit out of and be cheaper than its nVidia equivalent. Video cards are video cards. Saying all ATi cards have problems is like saying all nVidia cards have problems. They don't. The 280 is a nice card (although a little expensive for what you get), but anything from the 8-series or 9-series is shit IMO...that doesn't mean they will yield low performance, that means there is a better card you can get for the same amount of money.

You should have no problem playing the game because your processor is very nice. In SR2 your video card doesn't matter one bit. It seems all they did was run the Xbox 360 version through an x86 compiler and did nothing at all to optimize it.

But anyway there is a third-party tool to force whatever resolution you want. It works for me but the game still runs like shit and looks like shit. I'll stick to GTA4 for right now.

Oh and Zero Punctuation? Yeah, it's hilarious and I've been watching it since it came out. Yahtzee is funny, that doesn't make him right 100% of the time.

Okay, short version. How will SR2 look on a machine that runs GTASA nicely?

280 gig of HD

1 gig RAM

Nvidia 5500 w/ 512 meg video RAM

AMD Semperon 2500+

Vista - I take it they fixed some of the problems in Vista (wasn't too long ago you didn't like it). Either way, I'm about

to find out for myself. Got a new Compaq for the GF & it's Vista Home Premium (w/ AVAC & SP1).

I've got the '37 Ford w/ a warm Flathead, she got the new Mustang.

If the optimisation is as bad as chris82 says it is, then I doubt you'll be able to run it at all. That's not the most modern of PCs you've got there.

I don't really like SR2. I rented it, and I hated that if I wanted to do any of the story missions, that I have to fun around and mow over people with my car for half an hour before the retarded respect meter fills up. Cause you gotta admit, running around killing people for three hours gets a little repetative. :hurrhurr: The emote has nothing to do with anything, I just think it's hilarious looking.

I'd MUCH rather play GTA IV that Saints Row 2. It's a game that should have been released on the Original XBOX. It's just not up to par with the next gen of consoles. Really I expected much much better from this game. I loved the first game at first, because, that was all we had in terms of GTA style gameplay. Plus the look and feel was really excepted, but only because it was an early next gen game, meaning it was last gens tech on steroids. Sorry if all of this was said in previous posts, I just jumped to the end, I don't feel like reading that much tonight.

FG - Whaddup, long time no see.

Volition needs to get a patch to address some on the issues in SR2. A couple nights ago I was doing some co-op

& redid the first mission. The game crawled during the boat chase, at best running at about half speed. There's

also the issue of occasionally freezing on the X360, especially after the end cutscenes in co-op. A real pisser if

you just did a pain in the ass mission like "The Siege".

For my tastes graphics don't have to be up to the minute as long as the game runs smoothly, especially in view of my

older computer & justifying the cost of upgrading. One of the best games I ever played was Star Wars: Dark Forces.

Compared to the new games people would commit suicide en masse over this one, but it was a great game. I found

my old 486 in storage recently & am thinking of clearing a spot for it just so I can play around w/ my older games.

I recently loaded up GTA4 going after the achievement for "Deal Breaker" & doing some free roam, literally just

after playing SR2.

GTA's "realistic' handling falls short of SR2. The Shafter drove like it was on ice, SR2 cars almost always had better

handling. The NRG 900 sucked in corners whereas a SR2 Kensin carved nicely. These observations were made

from actual gameplay & not fanboyism.

R* (GTA4)

Advantages:

The cars look a lot better & more realistic. They have set a high standard that few have come close to.

Since I replaced my X360 w/ an elite, GTA4 has never crashed & always runs smoothly for me.

Multilayer. Generally fun & lots of options, one of the main reasons GTA4 went over so well. Match making goes

fairly quickly & when people act like they have manners it leads to good games.

Fails:

The quest for "Realism" has made GTA cars a chore to drive, taking some of the fun out of a great game.

Limited sidework, R* should have left in ambulance & firefighter in, these are longtime parts of GTA & GTA4

just isn't complete w/out them. The taxi is limited to just a few scripted missions.

Multiplayer. Funny, this one is both an advantage & a fail. SICK & TIRED OF "BOOT THE HOST". I got GTA4 at

a midnight release & since have only been in 2 boat races & maybe five heli races. Have learned to hate super cars

in star junction. Host should be immune to being booted & the ability to arbitrarily boot an unruly player.

No parachute. Liberty screams for one w/ all the tall buildings & R* dropped the ball on this one.

Volition (SR2)

Advantages:

The cars are (mostly) fun to drive & handle decently, controllable & fairly predictable for the average gamer.

In all fairness I lost interest in PGR & similar games because oversensitive handling, just not into it.

Activities, hands down. There's a dozen or so varied activities you can repeat as often as you want.

Diversions, see activities above. Armed robbery barnstorming, flashing & mugging, all in one convenient game.

Parachutes. They're automatic & base jumping is a blast in Stillwater. Base jumping diversion can give you one

of the best abilities in the game, falling from any height w/out injury (land on the Saint's gang car in the middle of

the target area.

Fails:

The two biggest exceptions to the above are the Socialite & Zircon, both great cars from the first game that

are horrible to drive this time. Helis, particularly the Thompson are notorious for flipping over on landing. I love

to fly but really miss the SA Maverick. In general they're a little delicate.

The collision files. While cars themselves handle decently, the way they react w/ other vehicles really needs

work. When driving the Bear (heavy 6 wheeled tank) you're constantly "scooped" by other cars & carried off,

especially cop cars. Not only unrealistic but extremely annoying.

Glitches. WHF?!?! SR2 is the only game I have that freezes my console, especially in activities. In co-op skip

the cutscenes, especially the ending ones. I've had a few harder missions that I've had to redo because the end

cutscene froze my deck. :pissedred:

Multiplayer. On average you sit 5-10 minutes & wait for matchmaking for what seems like 90 seconds of play.

When done you get kicked back to the main menu. There should be bots you can call in to fill a game & a host w/

options to set up a longer game.

Overall winner, kind of a hard call. If you're objective about it, you'll see there's room on the shelf for both games.

They're both good games that have their faults, but then what doesn't? People have called SR/SR2 GTA clones & if

that's the case they're the only ones to come so close. If anything Volition has given R* good competition & reason

to improve. Take the best parts of both & you have an epic game that will never be beat.

SR2 gets the kill shot w/ it's co-op play. Whether it's devaluing property w/ a septic truck, raining hell on the

Brotherhood w/ an attack heli or cleaning out a Ronin basement casino, SR2 co-op just rules & when you're rollin'

w/ the right partner it's easy to overlook SR2's shortcomings.

I played both IV and SR2 on the PS3 without experiencing any problems or anything disturbing. Both games were fun and a good waste of time but they are very different in a way. SR2, like said before, is not the most "realistic" game but it was still fun and in my oppinion, more fun than IV. I finished IV 89% and since then it has been sitting on my shelf covered in dust. Actually SR2 is lieying right next to it lol :gappy: . I just hooked myself up with COD and Midnightclub and kinda forgot bout these games  . Dont get me wrong, i honestly am a great fan of grand theft auto and rockstargames but the game just wasnt really worth the hype.
