Help with buying a laptop.

I know I've posted this before but this is the last time because now I REALLY am getting a new laptop, and I need your help.

My price range is 727 GBP (including tax) or under and I'm looking to order it over the internet. I want a good gaming laptop which is capable of running GTAIV and all the other great titles. I want at least:

-Graphics card which is similar to the NVIDIA 9600 (9800 if it fits under the price range).

-2 gigs of Ram.

-Decent Processor (don't know much about this so I'm trusting you).

-100GB or over of HD space.

-Good resolution and battery life.

Extras (only if these fit within the price range and still meet the above requirements:

-Blu-Ray drive which can also read DVD discs.

-HDMI slot.

Please reply as soon as possible as I will be going to the UK on the 18th of February and I need to order it to my brothers house as soon as I can.

I GREATLY appreciate any advice from anyone. Thanks in advance.

I'm doing the same at the moment and ended up with this:

Components

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.10 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 3 MB L2 cache)

Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1- English

1Yr XPS Premium Warranty Support - Priority Call In and Onsite Support

2.0 mega pixel Camera & Tuxedo Black for CCFL Display

15.4" Widescreen™ WXGA (1280x800) TFT Display (220nits) with TrueLife™

3072MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [1x2048+1x1024]

250GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive

NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 8600M GT with 256MB dedicated graphic memory

Fixed 8x DVD+/-RW Slim Slot Load drive, including SW

Primary 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (56 WHr)

All for 760 GBP. Including VAT and shipping. Only problem is, that extra 100 pounds from the VAT exceeds it over my budget. I can get a VAT refund if I buy it from a shop so I asked my brother to look in the local shops for something similiar.

Shipping costs to the UK will be a nightmare, and most US retailers refuse to ship electronics outside the country.

I will always advise against going with Dell, the only good thing about them is the customisation they offer. Apart from that they're incredibly unreliable, have shitty support, and are poorly built. HP (the UK site) might be a place to look. If you're fine with a stock model which fits your specs then use these popular and reputable sites:

http://www.ebuyer.com

http://www.scan.co.uk

http://www.dabs.co.uk

http://www.microdirect.co.uk

http://www.overclockers.co.uk

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149035 - this one has everything you specified, even BluRay, though no HDMI port. £771.61 so slightly over your budget, but all the cheaper ones have integrated graphics so you'd have no chance of playing IV.

Chris I'm only looking at the UK sites, the HP shipping only costed 20 Pounds so it wasn't that bad...

Anything over 740 GBP including or excluding VAT is useless to me. The only one I like so far is this one:

Looking at the sites you posted now, thanks.

EDIT:

Found one which may be good but I don't know about ATI cards. Here are the specs:

- Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium

- Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 2.00GHz 2MB Cache (667MHz FSB)

- Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 512MB

- Memory: 3GB DDR2 RAM

- Hard Drive: 250GB SATA (5400RPM)

- Optical Drive: Blu-Ray

- Screen: 16.0" WXGA CineBrite LCD Widescreen (1366x768)

All for £716.44 inc VAT.

Found another as well but it seems too good to be true for it's price:

Well I'm not too bothered about GTAIV but what about say COD:WaW? I won't be gaming too much on my laptop as I have a PS3 anyway.

I Recommend 3 gig of RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo T 9550 processor if it fits in your range.

6 MB L2 Cache, 2.66 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, Dual Core

(Excellent computing power!)

How big a screen do you need?

You could save a TON of money with a smaller screen.

Yeah, that processor won't hold up well.

Also, you could just buy a Desktop Computer with the same performance and half the price, buy a small monitor, big battery and power converter, then tape it all together with keyboard, etc. :dribble:

(Might be a little big and heavy :P )

I'm looking for a laptop, not a desktop. I asked my brother to look in the shops around Edinburgh so if he doesn't get back to me with a good one I'll post back here.

Thanks for your advice everyone.

Did you not read my whole joke about the desktop computer??

And obviously I knew that, otherwise I wouldn't have put in a link to a mobile processor.

Bump.

I might have found a good laptop but I'm not too sure on the processor and the graphics card. Here are the specs:

Product Description Sony VAIO SZ71E/B - Core 2 Duo T7250 2 GHz - 13.3" TFT

Platform Technology Intel Centrino Duo

Processor Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 / 2 GHz ( Dual-Core )

Cache Memory 2 MB - L2 Cache

RAM 2 GB (installed)

Hard Drive 160 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 5400 rpm

Display 13.3" TFT 1280 x 768 ( WXGA ) - X-black

Graphics Controller NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS/ Intel GMA X3100

Memory Allocation Technology Dynamic Video Memory Technology 4.0

All for 723 GBP (including VAT). Here's the link http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139574/show_...#specifications

Also I can get VAT refund with this which helps a lot, thats about 100 pounds less I think.

EDIT: I'm not so bothered if this laptop can run GTAIV anymore, but can it run COD:WaW on good settings?

This is the final laptop I'll post here, but please reply and tell me what you think. The Nvidia 8400M GS sounds like a decent graphics card for games.

Nvm, I made up my mind on a Dell. This can be closed now. Thanks everyone for helping me.
