basicly take backup of whatever you'r replacing, when it come to big mods (conversions)

also IMG tool, open only a handfull files fx GTA3.IMG. so taking backup of that would be great to do also.

Note: however, you don't have to backup the files within fx GTA3.IMG unless you don't want to risk loosing the already working mods installed

You can even make a backup of your whole unmodified San Andreas folder if you have a big hard drive. That way you can play your modified version and your unmodified version.

Every time I install a Total Conversion, I do that incase something fucks up in the mod and I'll have to reinstall the whole thing and it's boring. I recommend you highly to do that.
