Rockstar have announced that GTA V has been delayed until 17th September 2013 in a newswire post today, allowing for "additional development time".

Dear all,

Today, we have an official release date to share with you: Grand Theft Auto V will arrive in stores on September 17, 2013.

We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time. GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.

To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay, and our promise that the entire team here is working very hard to make the game all it can be. We are doing all we can to help ensure it will meet if not exceed your expectations come September – we thank you for your support and patience.

Yours,
The GTA Team

Rockstar also issued a press release.

Los Santos: a sprawling sun-soaked metropolis full of self-help gurus, starlets and fading celebrities, once the envy of the Western world, now struggling to stay afloat in an era of economic uncertainty and cheap reality TV. Amidst the turmoil, three very different criminals plot their own chances of survival and success: Franklin, a former street gangster, now looking for real opportunities and serious money; Michael, a professional ex-con whose retirement is a lot less rosy than he hoped it would be; and Trevor, a violent maniac driven by the chance of a cheap high and the next big score. Running out of options, the crew risks everything in a series of daring and dangerous heists that could set them up for life.

“Grand Theft Auto V continues to push the series forward in new ways; Rockstar North are creating our deepest, most beautiful and most immersive world yet,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We are very excited for people to learn more about the game in the coming months.”

The September release date moves the launch back from its original projected release window of spring 2013 in order to allow additional development time. The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world Rockstar Games has yet created, Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game’s three lead characters, playing all sides of the game’s interwoven story.

All the classic hallmarks of the groundbreaking series return, including incredible attention to detail and Grand Theft Auto’s darkly humorous take on modern culture, alongside a brand new and ambitious approach to open world multiplayer.

As always you can share your thoughts in the forums. We're prepared for all your immature and irrationally angry comments. Remember it's a game guys. A game.

My thoughts: Fuck rockstar!! If they're gonna fuck with us like that they better start providing us with some new and better media!

And where is the box art we were promised?

YES HOW DARE THEY MAKE SURE THE GAME ISN'T BUGGY AS F*** WHEN IT'S RELEASED! FUCK YOU ROCKSTAR YOU MOTHERF***ERS.

Grab your molotovs and peanut butter, let's go teach Rockstar not to f*ck with us. We're gonna make that piece of s*it studio of theirs look like Christmas in Afganistan! Come on!

Dissapointed by the reactions of people on the forums and news feeds. Can't say I'm suprised though. Take your time Rockstar and no need to apologize, the sense of entitlement by those so called "fans" will fade away eventually. Sucks we couldn't get the box art today, but at least there is a release date.

I take that back. Fans are understandably frustrated, but some comments are uncalled for. The proverbial "child in a candy store" is the case here. I will take a delay over rehashed annual releases anyday. By all means vent out your frustration, but Rockstar does not deserve the comments they are receiving.

This is great news imo, we finally have a concrete release date and Rockstar is making sure they will release the best possible version of the game. September 17 is all that should matter.

The reaction is to be expected these days. That's unfortunately what the community has become.

I'm actually more surprised (read: surprised, not angry) that they chose not to release the box art regardless of any delay. They were presumably ready for it at the start of the month, I don't see how any major component of it would change between now and then that they would have to delay that too. Seems quite strange to me.

I don't think I'm really surprised. This is Rockstar we're talking about, and it's pretty much a given that they'll delay a game if they need the time. I remember GTA IV being delayed, and according to my googlefu it appears that RDR and LA Noire were also delayed before their releases. It's just disappointing that they had to turn their back on their promise of Spring 2013.

Know what's the best part? That there was never a delay, because there was never a release date ether :)

That's the result of too much hype and speculation and not enough media access and news. I can haz peanut butter?

LA Noire, Delayed? Too fecking right, six years it took from announcement to release.

Canis Canem Edit, delayed.

Max Payne 3, delayed (by 2 years!).

Rockstar Delay games, but only to improve them. Just shows they're not a corporate shitbox like EA, they want to make games, not just money.

I know, but as long as it at least annoys you, my mission isn't a total failure. By "you" I mean the general audience of this wonderful community and the general GTA fanboybase.

And I was making fun of the little kids who cry about game delays, that never gets old.

Sorry, but "To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay[...]" and "spring 2013" sounds different to me...

But i also rather wait, then get a buggy game, especially with such a big city. "Real" R* fans are used to delays anyway, as this is necessary with every good game...

Exactly. I'd rather have it delayed than end up with some cliche annually-released FPS game. Let R* do their job, your patience will thank you.

Rockstar, we have been friends for a while. But now your starting to turn into that friend that I count on to be late every time.

But I knew that this would happen anyway. Spring 2013 did seem too soon to release a game that has very little information and screenshots. Kind of odd though how they didn't show the Box Art as promised.

I missed it even BEFORE I went to work, second shift. Wasn't expecting much until something big happened, like WAIT FOR IT.... Game's COVER ART!!!??

Anywho, I left my own SC comments on the newsbyte at Rockstar's site.

http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/48591/grand-theft-auto-v-is-coming-9172013.html/#comments

I was expecting no later then May in terms of a SPRING release, so waiting for the one, the only, until fall of this year is a bit much, but I won't say it's going to mean fantastic quality in the game, I don't believe it will be far and beyond what we've seen so far, but that any issues are taking longer to straighten out with the massive size of it involved, and the complexity I believe relates specifically with the alternating of three protags within just the storyline, which has to come off without any hitches, one can expect.

The AI for all NPC as well is just as paramount an issue for the Rockstar Team to address in the months ahead, I believe they're striving to advance this so you do notice the marked improvement.

They haven't talked about PC or next gen consoles, but that doesn't mean no PC version or that GTA's being pushed ahead in time for release on new consoles, using RAGE and Euphoria, that frankly is pretty flawed logic.

BTW, speaking of frequent delays at Take2 and Rockstar North/Games, where's AGENT?!?!?!???????!!!

Did the game have a release date before? No. Blunder on Rockstar's part.

I'm quite disgusted at the reaction from these so called 'fans' to this news. I've read several comments on R*s newswire and facebook post. For fans to get so annoyed at a company for requiring a little more time to get the game to 100% perfection so that they, the fans can have the best possible experience is downright disgraceful. Ungrateful little shits.

If R* needs a little more time to get the game right then they can damn well have it. I love this game series and would hate to be disappointed by an unrefined, rushed release. The wait will be worth it, and life goes on.

Anyone ever hear this sort of fan outrage when a movie or artist's album get's delayed? (Chinese Democracy aside)

I am surprised at the reaction of the fans, its really a messed up situation but would you like rockstar to release the game soon so that you could complain about how shit the bugs in the game are?

I think they should take their time and focus on the final stages of V. I think they will release a third trailer to cheer you up, maybe?

I wouldn't exactly say this is only a GTA community problem. Maybe the culture is changing, the internet allows us to get away with things we normally wouldn't say to others, likewise I doubt some of those people would say the things they have said, to the developers faces who have been working their asses of the past four or five years.

Remember the uproar when Left 4 Dead 2 was announced. http://www.thegtaplace.com/forums/topic/23216-left-4-dead-2-boycott/ Sometimes people will freak out over anything, if only just to find something to complain about. Someone said it before there are many things to do between now and September. Relax and let Rockstar release the game, so that it is not the date we want, but the one we deserve.
