Explanation: This thread is here to tell the current rumors that have been circulating around many Grand Theft Auto sites.

Introduction: Rumors have always been around when a new Grand Theft Auto title is under production. Some rumors such as trying to figure out the new GTA setting have always been an interesting factor in speculation. This thread will show all the rumors that have been circulating various popular GTA sites on the web.

Rumors:

The London Theory: As many of you must know by now, London is one of the main locations people are suspecting Grand Theft Auto IV will take place/be based on. Many are the reasons for this particular speculation and here is a list of them all.

The GTA Series Theory: In Grand Theft Auto (1), the setting of the game was seperated in free major cities which are Liberty City, Vice City & San Andreas. Now after the release of GTA III, many people have been wondering if the next city for the new following GTA would be one of the two remaining cities featured in the original GTA. To their surprise, the next installment after GTA III was indeed GTA Vice City. After all the hype went down and people sat in their homes enjoying the game, Rockstar announces yet another GTA game to be released on the Playstation 2 platform. By now the main speculation was on the next setting being San Andreas becuase most people went by the order the last two games followed, and once again, people were right. After years of the release, Rockstar announces Grand Theft Auto IV to come out on the new next generation consoles, Playstation 3 & XBOX 360. This is where the London rumor kicks in, if Rockstar keep to their tradition of choosing the following city then it would be London right? Nobody knows. Nobody has any idea if Rockstar decide to call the Grand Theft Auto London expansion pack an actuall GTA game, this is the major debate. Maybe Rockstar decide to go for a GTA 2 style setting seeing as GTA 2 was not an expansion but many people remain undecided. Only time will tell!

The Radio Theory: This second theory is based on clues being given out over the radion stations in the game. Now in San Andreas there are clues to a British setting which can be found on the talk station WCTR.

Clues In-Game: There have always been many signs to a next GTA setting and some of them have indeed been correct. In GTA III there is a billboard that shows Miami and the next GTA happens to be based in a fictionalised 80's Miami setting. In Vice City there is the football player BJ Smith that talks about San Andreas on K-Chat. But Rockstar decided not to make it so easy with San Andreas, the clues are many of them hinting to not just one setting. There are the flight hours of the planes at the airport and one of them has London on it. There are people talking in a British accent, and also Maccer being featured in the game was a clue for some people.

In Conclusion: London has a really high possibility of being the next setting for the upcoming GTA IV.

The Carcer City Theory: Aside from the London speculation, one of the other main rumors for the next GTA setting is Carcer City. Now, Carcer City was featured in one of Rockstar's other games, Manhunt. Ever since GTA III, Carcer City played a strong contender for the main GTA settings that were currently being speculated in that time. Below are the list of clues to why people think Carcer City will feature in the next installment for the series:

In GTA III, on a radio station, you will hear straight after you enter the Kuruma car for the first time after the bank robbery cutscene, you will hear a female news reporter say " A good day for law and order , Carcer city police chief Gary Shaeffer has been cleared of corruption charges. Lets hope those missing witnesses turn up safe and sound!", this of course lead on to believing that Carcer City will be featured in the next GTA. But it wasn't!

In GTA San Andreas there were more clues not only leading to believe London as one of the locations but also Carcer City. During one of the commercial breaks on K-Rose, listen out for an advert for Carcer City. With the improved resolution on the PC version you can read the side of propane containers, which say "Carser Gas".

Specific Platform Specialities Rumor:

Ever since people have been notified of the announcement made by Rockstar in which it said which platforms GTA IV would be on, people have been wondering how big is the game going to be on such diverse consoles in terms of space.

People say that Rockstar will add higher resolution textures on the Playstation 3 version. Not much else has been speculated on this!

Extension To Liberty City Rumor:

When people found out what was actually over the non solid Liberty City mountains found up north, many speculations kicked in. People were guessing that one of the GTAs to come will feature an extended Liberty City.

Movies/Culture Theory:

As most of you know GTAs have always been should i say "inspired" by a film or a culture to the era the game is set in. In GTA III, the name Liberty City came from The Statue Of Liberty in New York City. There wasn't really a film inspiration on this game. In GTA Vice City then name Vice came from the popular 80's program Miami Vice. Vice City's theme was in many ways related to another 80's film, Scarface. In GTA San Andreas the name San Andreas came from the San Andreas Fault line in America. Thus the 3 large cities featured in the game are: Los Santos -> Los Angeles , San Fierro -> San Francisco , Las Venturas -> Las Vegas, also the desert was taken from the real life Nevada desert. Mount Chilliad is based on Mount Diablo.

Los Santos features landmarks reminiscent of Los Angeles, which include the Watts Towers, the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Capitol Tower, the U.S. Bank Tower, the Griffith Park Observatory, the Metro Link, the Forum, the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, and Grauman's Chinese Theater. The city of Los Santos has several important areas, including the gang-ridden neighborhoods of Ganton, Willow Field, Idlewood and East Los Santos, based on their actual counterparts, of Compton, Willowbrook, Inglewood, and East Los Angeles, respectively. Also located in the city is a busy downtown section, the wealthy Rodeo and Mulholland districts, beach areas representing Santa Monica and Venice, and glitzy Vinewood (complete with giant VINEWOOD sign in the hills), based on Hollywood.

San Fierro features Rockstar's interpretations of the Haight-Ashbury district ("Hashbury"), the Castro district ("Queens"), Chinatown, and the Golden Gate Bridge ("Gant Bridge"), as well as the city's prominent cable cars and hilly terrain. Several other familiar landmarks have been recreated, from the Embarcadero clock tower and the Transamerica Pyramid ("Big Pointy Building") to Lombard Street ("Windy Street"), and Scottish landmarks such as the Forth Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge. There is a district known as "Garcia", a tribute to Grateful Dead frontman and San Francisco native Jerry Garcia, and San Fierro's City Hall closely resembles San Francisco's ornate city hall.

Many real Las Vegas Strip casinos are faithfully interpreted on Las Venturas' Strip, including the Excalibur Hotel and Casino ("Come-a-Lot"), the Sphinx and pyramid of the Luxor Hotel ("The Camel's Toe"), and the Pioneer Club, with Vegas Vic and Vicki replaced by Vice City characters Avery Carrington and Candy Suxxx

In conlusion, many people are hinting to a possible theme for GTA IV by gathering up peices of past GTA games.

LITTLE RUMORS SECTION:

This section holds all the little rumors that people find lurking around the forums.

LIST:

Some people have heard that GTA IV would be set in 2004 with Claude returning as the Protagonist.

There was a rumour flying around here and gameFAQs that Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos) was gonna voice the protagonist in GTAIV apparently he said he was doing work for Rockstargames on an MTV interview.

Multiplayer - There were signs of multiplayer development in the GTA3 (PC) data files. GTA: San Andreas featured something very similar to multiplayer known as 'co-op'. Most recently, GTA: Liberty City Stories featured seven multiplayer game modes with each supporting upto six players. This evidence (and more) suggests that Rockstar are keen to develop a fully functional GTA multiplayer in future releases, so multiplayer is indeed a strong possiblity in Grand Theft Auto 4.

On another site a rumor popped up saying "The new GTA would play in New York City, in the early 90's

The story is based on the Russian Mafia vs. the Italian Mafia

Protagonist is an American-Italian working his way up the family"

Another rumor that surfaced many gaming website is this:

"We're told to expect much the same deal on PS3, except unique to the platform. Interestingly, the downloadable content, the source maintains, will take the form of brand new areas which will link into the main GTA IV game world."

"Think of the world as a large island - the new downloadable areas will be like smaller islands linking into it," the source explained. (Which is a structural analogy, rather than a suggestion that the game is set on an island.)

Added 10th December 2006:

People have started suspecting a possible DEMO release of GTA IV. This rumor most probably came from the fact that whilst Vice City was still in production, Rockstar released a demo which had only the Vice City Beach area unlocked and the rest of the world walled off (ONLY IN AMERICA).

Thats pretty much it, as the game nears to release and we recieve more info, i'll bet more rumors start popping up around sites, when that happens, this thread will be there to gather up rumors, if you have anything ive missed, please post.

Great first post!

I don't like the idea of having the GTA:4 game in London because then it would just be based around one city and that might make it look more like "Gangs of London". I would liek it to be based in America and I have heard that Carcer City would be a good site for the next GTA game so I am voting for Carcer City.
