Mouse / Resolution error? Help!

Hello,

I just started playing vice city and I have a very very annoying issue. The game occasionally stops detecting my mouse and then crash my game.

The situation is this.

Out of , say, every 20 times I press Esc to menu, there will be at least once, when I am in the menu, my mouse can move but when I click resume game or other options, nothing happens.

OR, out of every 20 times I click on RESUME GAME from the menu, there will be at least once, when my mouse totally doesn't work. My character cannot turn left, right, neither can he attack or look behind. The keyboard works fine though.

Now, this problem is still considered minor, because there are times when I just toggle between the menu and game screen, and the mouse will work fine again. The real problem comes here.

Most of the time when I attempt to toggle between the menu and game (i.e. pressin Esc on the game screen, or clicking RESUME GAME from the menu), the computer will become a black screen and Ctrl-Alt-Del will reveal that the game has stopped responding altogether. Hence, I have to restart the whole game, and any unsaved material will be lost.

On other occasions when my mouse work normally, I can toggle between menu and game very easily and smoothly. So it appears that the game freeze is linked to the game unable to detect my mouse, or the other way.

I have scoured the net and there are instances of people having the exact problem as mine, but it is very rare. And so far it seems no one has thought of any solutions yet.

I have tried deleting the .SET file, re-installing the game 4-5 times already, changing the compatibility to Win98, playing with the resolution, frame limiter, and all do not work for me.

The problem is very frustrating because on top of the fact that I keep having to re-do missions which I have difficulty completing to begin with, I don't know if it is the mouse problem or the monitor problem. (Because usually black screen freezes are due to resolution / graphics error, but mine only happens when the mouse is undetectable.)

My comp specs are as follows:

PC

Windows Vista Home premium

AMD dual core 4200+

2 gig ram

geforce 7300

If it helps, initially my game is unable to fit the monitor screen, and only when changing the resolution to 800 x 600 (minimum) will the game fit correctly.

Please help and advise, I am very very desperate for this. I've searched high and low... and tried to ignore the problem but it's really driving me nuts! VC would be an awesome game if not for problems like these.
