I just helped my aunt with the same thing. Her harddrive had a bad spot, find out which brand harddrive it is ex. maxtor, western digital, seagate, etc, and go to their website and download their bootable utlities disk, run the full (the longer of the two) test, chances are that there is a bad sector on the disk.
That dosen't always mean that the disk is trash, you may be able to do a low level format, but you will loose EVERYTHING and you will have to re-install everything.
If it is a virius, I think you can boot from a norton AV disk, and that might fix it.
also try to hit down the F8 key right after the POST screen, when the choice comes up choose to boot into safe mode (If it gets there)
try that stuff
maybe your problem can be fixed before you just re-install. Sometimes that works, but if there is a disk, or virus problem, it will most likely pop up again, if you just re-install windows
If it does come down to re-installing windows, boot from the windows disk, and do a format, then reinstall a fresh copy, That will elimanite the virus issue

Sound card only handles sound. So no.
cool, I will just buy a new vid card

I have an older creative sound blaster live 5.1 card with the front panel. I am having problems with very slow game play, I also have a ATI 9200 vid card, and a p4 3.2 w/1024 RAM. I know the video card needs to be replaced, but can the sound card also be slowing down the game? I have to buy a new vid card, I know, but if I do, will that fix my problem, or do I have to buy a audigy 2 card too?
I don't need all the real fancy sound effects and stuff, I only have 2 speakers and a sub anyway. I just want the game to play smooth and fast

That is not true. I have a GeForce FX 5500. It gives better than Xbox performance at 1280x1024 resolution with medium Visual FX details. Rockstar reccommends GeForce6 series, if you want Anti-Aliasing and such, which really isn't needed at 1280x1024. Also, for GeForce 6 series you need PCI-express or AGP, being that the fastest standard-PCI card (besides the FX 5600) is the FX 5500.
I have an agp slot, and a p4 3.2 w/ 1024 pc3200. I don't want to spend a lot, just get a card that will play with out the choppyness. I can live without the higest res, and all the effects turned up, I just want the cheapest card possible. my ati 9200 plays real slow when a lot of stuff is going on

I am looking for a new vid card, just to play GTA SA. I have a ATI 9200, and saw tiger direct has a g-force 5500 for 46.00 after rebate. Will that do the job?

I am running 3 computers with intel CPU's, an Old P1-233, a p3 1gig, a p4 3.2 gig.
I had 1 AMD Fry on me, a Athlon Xp 2500. Not overclocked or anything, just went.
I can't say I didn't like it, It was faster than the Intel chips of the same speed, but It died.
i would try a 64 chip, but the p4 was real cheap through buy.com at the time, and there wern't many apps written for the 64 to be fully used, so i went with the P4
The fastest speed increase i saw in doing all of my upgrades, was to put 2 WD 74 gig Raptior drives, (the 10,000 rpm, SATA ones) in RAID 0, That really seemed to speed it up

What is a cheap card that will do a good job with san andreas? I don't really play any other games. I do need 1 DVI, and one Analog vid out fot the dual monitor thing
Righty do you have any problems running your 5500? what kind of frame rates do you get?
-
Well...5Mbps down cable is only $30 where I live...
I got 6mbs cable here for $56/mo. and I am going to switch to 3mbs dsl for 24/mo I hope i can stand the slow down, but 56/mo is too much

I have a ati 9200 128MB now and Just started playing San Andreas, and it Gets a bit choppy at some of the more action packed spots. I was thinking of the GeForce FX 5500 How does it do on San Andreas? I pretty much turned all of the graphics settings down to the lowest settings, but still get the choppyness with the 9200. I have a P4 3.2 with 1024 Ram
thanks

It usually shows a view from right behind me, but when i turn or get too close to something it changes to a side view, or over the top view. I was doing a drive-by mission and it gets tough, because the people I am shooting at arn't vivible
I figured it out, i was using the LMB for the handbrake, which was changing my camera when the mouse moved, I swiched it to the num0 and Now it plays right
