British launch of Grand Theft Auto IV marred by stabbing

LONDON -- British police were Tuesday hunting the attacker of a man stabbed as he walked by shoppers queuing to buy the latest edition of the notoriously violent computer game "Grand Theft Auto IV."

Around 100 people waiting for the game to go on sale at midnight Monday saw a hooded man jump out of the queue outside a shop in Croydon, south London, and repeatedly stab the 23-year-old passer-by, police said.

A customer purchases the 18 certificate computer game ' Grand Theft Auto IV' at the Zavvi store, Oxford Street on the day of its release on April 29, 2008 in London, England. The game was released today for the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION3 consoles and sold out on the morning of its release at this central London branch.

The victim required treatment to several stab wounds but later left hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

"Grand Theft Auto IV" is expected to become the biggest-selling entertainment title of all time.

It is anticipated it will sell six million copies within the first week of its release, smashing the record held by another video game, "Halo 3."

The "Grand Theft Auto" series, which has already sold 70 million copies, has come under fire for its depiction of casual violence, drug dealing and prostitution.

The latest edition follows an eastern European criminal operating in the United States.

And here's an article by GamesRadar saying the stabbing had nothing to do with GTA.

Just goes to show that people overreact and always blame GTA.
