BluRay burning

I bought a BD burner last Christmas but over frustrated attempts just to play BD with a software player, on laptop or desktop, I bought a stand alone Sony that just plays DVDs and BluRay direct to the TV. I'm still encountering errors with virtually all the free software players. I hope you guys and or gals might help me and others figure out which computer based solutions are best, for low to no cost, of course, ....if any

 

Here's the complicated fix for VideoLan software, but I still can't seem to get a good idea of the steps I need to take for my disc collection, if it varies from disc to disc based on copy protection schemes implemented?
