Edinburgh Airport has a 'Hole'

Edinburgh Airport was closed to incoming flights for almost three hours due to a hole found in its main runway.

Planes were diverted to Glasgow and Prestwick airports following the discovery at 1500 BST.

A secondary runway was being used for departing flights but delays are expected for the rest of the day.

The runway is undergoing a resurfacing programme which is conducted at nights. A BAA spokeswoman said the hole was fixed by about 1715 BST.

The spokesman said: "Earlier this afternoon we temporarily closed our main runway following the discovery of an area of damage to its surface.

"The runway was closed for just under three hours in order to carry out repair work.

"During this time aircraft operated from our secondary runway.

"However as a result of the temporary closure, 11 inbound flights had to be diverted to other airports and a number of arriving and departing aircraft are expected to experience delays."

An Edinburgh Airport spokesman earlier said: "The main runway is having resurfacing work done and combined with bad weather there is a hole.

"Due to the misty, foggy conditions we are not taking any arriving flights on our secondary runway."

It follows an advisory notice from BAA asking airlines to take extra fuel from airports south of the borders so they do not have to use up vital reserves in Scotland ahead of a petrol strike.
