  1. To answer your questions about groups:

Yes, everyone starts off the in the standard 'Validating' group when they sign up. When the user confirms his/her email address he/she is moved into the 'Members' group. Users who fail to validate their account in 7 days are removed.

Most other groups are either staff or are now unused (such as the Banned group which is no longer used due to the way IPB now handles banning users).

GTA Guru is someone who has proven themselves to have excellent knowledge about a particular GTA game, and is a respectable and trusted member of the community. They are given permission to moderate that particular game's forums.

Elite Members was a group intended for veterans and other long-standing and decent members of the community. It is not in use at the moment.

    About the code:

The main website is completely my own code, with the exception of some JavaScript libraries (jQuery).

The forums are powered by a stock version of IPB (currently version 3.2). The large feature set means we don't have many modifications here. The only one in fact is the awards system.

In early 2003, before we had proper hosting, I set up a forum at ProBoards.com (lol). A few months later I got hosting and set up phpBB (I think it was version 2.0 at the time). We used this for several months, maybe a year, I don't remember exactly, before we switched to IPB which at the time was at version 1.2. In early 2004 my hotmail account was hacked and through my emails the hacker managed to find passwords to the website's control panel, and subsequently deleted everything, including database backups, and since I had none saved on my own computer I had to restart the forums, hence why the earliest member join dates here are in February 2004. We've stuck with IPB ever since then and upgraded through each major version. Many code modifications were in place on older versions; we had a store, an arcade, a GTA style text-based RPG system I had coded myself which integrated with the store, and various other minor feature additions. The novelty of those mods wore off and we no longer feel the need to have them here.

    Notable events?

Aside from the original hacking I mentioned before I can't think of too many but it depends what you class as notable, what sort of things are you hoping to hear about?

I think there's a screenshot of 100,000 posts with 6,666 members somewhere which I guess was kinda cool if you like numbers.

We've had a few weird member incidents: Mgilb, Lisa Juarez, me and kokane ... don't think they're relevant for a newbie guide though.

  2. Well it's in Finnish so hardly anyone here is going to be able to read it. It doesn't even make sense with Google Translate. Removing link and closing topic since it's pretty much just spamming as it doesn't offer any useful input to the community.

  3. Thanks for your comments.

Not sure what you mean by file size. I never did much modding of GTA IV but I was under the impression that this bug was to do with the number of cars you had modded, rather than any sizes. I think some people made patches to load lots of car models into memory on starting the game which would fix it, but sometimes doing this would cause the game to crash.

Did you check any GTAForums threads about this? This one for example: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=464013&st=0

  4. off her bus? What?

GTA III game saves are not cross-device compatible, so I don't think you'll be able to convert any PC saves. However you might be able to use someone else's Android save, I'm not currently aware of any online though. Unless someone else here can upload one for you.

  5. Thanks Evo, fixed all those things now.

Yeah the live search doesn't include news stories at the moment. Not sure where to include them in the results.

Jimmy, I didn't actually. Did you PM or email? I haven't received anything from you.

  6. Happy new year everyone! If you're reading this on the main site you'll notice things have changed a bit. This updated layout is just one of a number of changes we have planned for The GTA Place in 2012, and we hope you'll like the changes we've made so far.

The first new feature I'd like to point out is the new live search at the top right hand corner of every page, this offers quick and easy access to all our content (which we are in the process of making even better), with search results appearing as you type.

Perhaps more obvious is the fact we've moved the navigation to the right hand side, and also made it much bigger, while still allowing ample space for content as well as giving us the opportunity to highlight new and interesting content through features which we will be regularly updating.

A number of improvements have also been made to the backend code which should mean pages load slightly faster for you. As with all site updates, there may be a few bugs here and there that need to be ironed out. If you see any, do let us know in the comments and we'll get them fixed ASAP.

As stated last week, this is just the first of the changes we have planned. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks including the launch of our mobile website and v2.0 of our downloads database!

  7. I've seen this before and I lol'd slightly. Can't tell if he's seriously raging or just making fun of some of the shittier mods here. Either way it's no big deal to me personally. I'm well aware there are some horrendously bad mods uploaded here, the funny thing is I delete a lot of them - so you can only imagine how bad some have been.

Huckleberry Pie is also aware that barely anyone appreciates his Strawberry Shortcake mods and he already gets a lot of shit for it. Can understand why since he's probably one of the few people who has an interest in that and GTA as well, so it's weird to most, but still, no reason not to allow his mods.

But yeah a lot of his "points" are about the poor graphics of the game and he's just using bad mods as examples of that. It's 4chan, can't take it seriously. Thread was archived for its humour, nothing wrong with that, and to be honest that was probably what was intended, as well as bashing some mod authors :P

  8. Yep, it's that time of year again! Things are looking a lot more optimistic on the GTA scene this time round. The announcement of GTA V two months ago peaked our collective interest in Grand Theft Auto once more, but as we anticipate the release of another trailer and the first screenshots and previews to come forth, there's not much to do but continue to speculate. We can't be sure when new info will appear, but it's best to keep checking back here as often as possible, you never know when Rockstar might treat us to something special.

Since news of GTAV broke, The GTA Place has been undergoing a bit of a revamp behind the scenes, and we've got some exciting changes to show you very soon. We're now ready to announce that on New Year's Day we'll be revealing an updated layout to the main website, with more improvements to come soon after. Some of these improvements include some much-needed changes to our downloads database which will make uploading and managing your mods a whole lot easier, as well as the launch of a dedicated mobile version of the website for a better experience on mobile devices and tablets. We'll have more details on all this and more for you in the new year.

Just as an FYI, we'll be offline for about an hour on 1st January while we update the site. The forums will remain online during this time, though, and we'll keep you informed via our social network pages as usual.

Thank you all for continuing to visit The GTA Place, and thanks again to those of you who are our fans on Facebook, Twitter and our recently launched Google Plus page. Following us on these websites is a great way to ensure you stay up to date with all the latest news, and your support is always greatly appreciated.

We hope you all have a great Christmas and New Year!

  9. Rockstar have today updated the Android version of Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition to version 1.1 with a number of fixes and added support for the Droid Bionic, Galaxy Nexus and Samsung Galaxy S II devices.

    This fixes include:

    • A fix so that immediately skipping cutscenes will no longer cause issues
    • The addition of PowerVR GPU support
    • Improved shader error handing and a few additional technical fixes

To update your game, just go to the Android Market on your device where you'll be prompted to download the latest version.

  10. Yes they just accumulate. Criminal Rating always goes up, it only goes down when certain cheats are used.

Media Attention varies based on how much media attention you are getting. Basically the longer you stay on 6 wanted stars and cause mayhem it will go up. It will gradually decrease if you don't keep this up.

  11. I've no idea. Probably not unless you ordered it online. The lack of responses to this topic pretty much confirmed my thoughts though, that hardly anyone actually picks up gaming mags any more.

Ah well. I'll pick it up if they do quote me. Never actually received a response from the guy after I replied with my answers to the questions he gave :/

  12. Last week we showed you the Vice City RAGE mod for GTA IV that is looking very good already and due to be released next month, and if you've been following GTA IV modding news you may remember we reported on a similar project a few months ago, one which brought San Andreas into GTA IV. Today, the GTAIV: San Andreas team have finally released the second beta of their mod, adding new features including radio, a new HUD, improved map, new lights, plus many more. Here's a video of the mod

The download is a rather large 1.5GB, but there are a number of sites hosting it as well as a torrent available. Download links can be found on the GTAIVSA website. We'll have our own mirror up soon.

  13. Just wondering if anyone here reads this magazine, it's UK based, the biggest independent mag for Xbox 360.

Reason I ask is because I've been asked a few GTA V related questions to give my opinions and thoughts on. Apparently they will quote some/all of my answers in issue 81 of the mag which goes on sale January 25th. TGTAP has appeared in a couple of mags before but only as a link to the website for whatever reason - this will be the first time I'll appear in a magazine as part of an actual "industry reaction" piece so that'll be nice.

Not sure how popular physical magazines are these days. Does anyone here read ANY gaming magazines?

  14. Nice screens Chris! I should take some off my iDevices of the same shots for comparisons sake. Have to say it looks pretty similar to me so would have to compare side by side to notice any graphical difference. I think there might be less jaggies on the iOS version though.

Actually, apparently it's "compatible" with my old HTC HD2 which I loaded an Android ROM on. I could actually play both myself lol but it would kill my battery, also not sure it would actually run since Android Market believes I'm using a Nexus One since that's what the ROM is from :P

Chris, genuine question and not trying to troll, but how is the battery life while playing? Play the game for 30 mins or an hour or so, how much % of the battery does this take?

Huck, I don't find it surprising at all actually. It seems to be a pretty direct port from the PC version so it makes sense they kept it all the same. Moving to RAGE would be a LOT more work and would probably increase the game size so much it wouldn't really be playable on mobile devices. As for the modding, yeah me and Psy (from iGTA) were commenting on this on Facebook. There's a few tutorials out there now, probably gonna experiment a bit myself and get some info up here.

  15. Oh yeah you're right. There's a 50MB filesize limit, never even knew that and I'm a developer lol. I'm guessing this is because most people download apps directly on their device so are often use their mobile data connection rather than WiFi - unlike the App Store where you can just download stuff to your computer and then sync it.

  16. Yeah I was thinking that. It's probably just the localised part you download, the actual game is probably the same for all versions so it's downloaded through the app itself, guess it's easier for them to manage that way although still a bit of a weird way around it since they haven't done this for the iOS version.

In case anyone is wondering, GTA3 takes up 690MB of space when installed to your device, so bear that in mind if you need to free up space first.

IPB ImageGrand Theft Auto III has finally made its way on to select Apple and Android devices today. We'd definitely recommend getting this game if your device is compatible - just think of all the nostalgia! App Store and Android Market links are below. New features added to the game include:

    • an intuitive, fully scalable and customizable user interface;
    • upgraded textures;
    • greater resolution and draw distance;
    • new mission replay and autosave features for an all-new experience on mobile devices.

Welcome to Liberty City. Where it all began.

Rockstar Games celebrates the 10th anniversary of one of the most influential games of all time. The critically acclaimed blockbuster Grand Theft Auto III comes to mobile devices, bringing to life the dark and seedy underworld of Liberty City. With a massive and diverse open world, a wild cast of characters from every walk of life and the freedom to explore at will, Grand Theft Auto III puts the dark, intriguing and ruthless world of crime at your fingertips.

With stellar voice acting, a darkly comic storyline, a stunning soundtrack and revolutionary open-world gameplay, Grand Theft Auto III is the game that defined the open world genre for a generation.

Thankfully the app is a universal binary, so for those who own an iPad and an iPhone will only have to purchase the game once to play it on multiple devices, the same goes for those of you with Android devices. Let us know in the comments if you've bought it and how it plays on your device, on which you'll need around 690MB of free space by the way. I'll be trying it on my iPad 2 tonight and I might post a short review for you all later.

    Apple owners: iTunes Link - $4.99 (£2.99 / 3,99 €)

    Android owners: Market Link - $4.99 (£3.23 / 3,85 €)

NOTE (for Android users): Localised versions of the game have been made for users in Australia, Germany and Japan, presumably to comply with local laws and/or language issues. If you reside in one of these countries you'll have to purchase the localised version.

    Currently supported devices:

    • Apple iOS Devices: iPad 1 & 2, iPhone 4 & 4S, iPod touch 4th Generation
    • Android Phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x
    • Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive
