  1. I've read that people couldn't get the game to run on Windows 7, but you're probably right. I had the game running pretty well on a 2GHz AMD X2 a while back, so I think he'd probably get away with that processor if he got a decent graphics card.
  2. I would try getting another GB of memory (or more if you have XP 64bit). It's pretty cheap and easy to install, just check that your motherboard supports it. Other than that, I'd say that you would want a graphics card with at least 512mb VRAM. You'll definitely need a new graphics card. Also, GTA IV doesn't support Windows 7. Sorry.
  3. Seems Rockstar have fixed the random crashes and instability in multiplayer mode. I can also now use Independence FM without the game crashing. Haven't tested whether the mission 'payback' loads in less than 2 hours yet cause I'm now past that point on both my saves... But still, thanks Rockstar!
  4. Yeah I was surprised that it ran as well as it did when I built my new PC, considering neither my processor nor graphics card meet the 'reccommended' requirements. I know that Vista 32 only supports 3GB RAM. I have 4GB in my computer, buy Windows only recognises 3GB. I'm not that bothered though, since I can play every game I own on max settings anyway (with the exception of GTA IV, which I'm pretty happy with as it is).
  5. The Sultan RS can be found behind the garage of the mansion in North Alderney The Sentinel XS is usually found in North Alderney while driving a regular Sentinel. I've never seen a Stratum Turbo. Is it quick? I've heard that there's also a Futo Turbo, but I've yet to see one of them as well.
  6. Lucky. What's your OS? And if it's Vista, 64bit or 32bit? I'm running Vista 32bit, hence the 3GB RAM. I actually have 4GB in my computer, but I don't want to reinstall windows now that I have everything working. The game runs silky-smooth at these settings: Obviously I get the pixellated shadows and occasional blank textures in the distance, but that's not really an issue.
  7. I'm running GTA IV on this system: AMD X2 6000+ 3.1GHz 3GB RAM ATi 3850 512mb I'd say that your system is about equal with that, and I can run the game fine at 1600x1200 with all settings on medium/high. I don't get any stuttering or framerate issues at all and the game looks beautiful. In fact, even when I was running the same system with just a 2.1GHz AMD X2 the game still ran pretty well. So yeah, I'd say that you're fine. A quad core can't make that much difference.
  8. LOL, I've never seen that before. That has to be a glitch...unless they were smoking a cig and dropped it on their very flammable pants. That happens when sometimes the car itself catches fire. I've had it happen a few times, usually when I hit someone with a truck.
  9. I also miss the garages. It pisses me off when you get a cab and he drives right into your cars and you have to re-park them. But then this could be fixed simply with better AI, so that random people don't just drive into your cars, because garages wouldn't be very realistic in a large built up city.
  10. To be honest, all I want from a safehouse is to be able to save in it. I didn't buy GTA IV to watch TV, I'd rather the developers concentrate on making the game itself better. Perhaps a computer in each apartment to check your mail might be helpful, and a few more places to store cars would be good, but other than that, I'm not bothered.
  11. Just so that you know, Independence FM is very buggy. If you get it working, it tends to make the game crash a lot. Sometimes you will randomly get static when you enter a car and the game will crash a few seconds later, other times it will just crash between songs. Either way Rockstar need to fix it.
  12. I'll just be playing the game and all of a sudden... BAM! the game freezes, I lose all my progress since my last save and I break another damn keyboard. Anyone else sick of this? The latest one I got was this: Description: Critical runtime problem Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPLICATION CRASH System RAM: 2147483647 Available RAM: 1612963840 Number of CPUs: 2 Video Card Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc. Video Card Description: ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series Video Card Driver Version: 7.15.0010.0163 OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 2057 Read our privacy statement: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=50163&clcid=0x0409 This seems to be the most common crash. I've also had the problem where whenever I try to load up the mission 'payback' (just before the chase) the game takes literally 2 hours or so to load. In fact, I've had enough of these bugs altogether. Console gamers don't get them. I can't play online without a crash every couple of minutes, I sometimes get blank textures instead of roads, and occasionally I'll be driving along and my car will flip randomly because I hit an invisible object. Oh, guess what I nearly forgot to add? Another feature which I bought the game for is Independance FM. Can I use it? Well yes, but I'm not prepared to sacrifice (relative) stability for a few of my own songs. I get random freezes and crashes between songs regularly. Are Rockstar even working on a patch? I haven't heard anything and I'm starting to get pissed of that my experience of what could be the greatest game I've ever played is being constantly ruined by this shit. I had to sit through that painful installation process 7 times, the least they could do is make the game actually work once I got it running. I have no issues with the graphics, I have no issues with the requirements, I have no issues with the game at all. I just want it to bloody work. Excuse me while I pick up the pieces of my latest keyboard. Edit: before anyone flames me for making a pointless thread: my question is a simple one. I just want to know whether Rockstar are doing anything to sort out these problems.
  13. The sultan is pretty easy to handle. It's quite quick and you can catch the back end easily if it starts to drift. I think it's one of the best cars in the game. I don't like the comet because it looks like a porsche. I've never liked porsche. The engine's in the wrong place.
  14. I've never used any cheats or mods for IV. Strange. Especially since nobody else seems to have had it happen to them. Maybe Rockstar really are trying to screw with our minds!
  15. The PC version. Considering the amount of other bugs this game has, I wouldn't be surprised if it was just another.
  16. No. Sorry. You need at least an Athlon X2 processor to run the game, and your graphics card is nowhere near good enough. You pretty much need a new PC.
  17. Nope, was in the middle of algonquin. I've already beat the game once, so I know where the barriers are.
  18. I had just done about 3 missions without saving when I ran over a cop. Instead of the 2 stars I expected, I got 6 stars for no apparant reason and was killed, which pissed me off quite a lot. Has this happened to anyone else? Is this even supposed to happen or is it a bug?
  19. believe it or not i have used search and actually found those two tutorials, unfortunately they don't work. whoever wrote them didn't really give much thought and just wrote that they thought was the answer. you see C:\User\ as one tutorial pointed out where the word "user" is your username doesn't exist. the other tutorial you pointed out also doesn't work where the user even says it doesn't work. In XP, as it says in one of the threads, it is C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames. It is only C:\users in vista. I don't know whether it is the same in XP, but in vista you also have to set windows explorer to show hidden files and folders. It's in the options menu.
  20. In which case, someone else will have to help you. I can't remember what the folders are called in XP, but they're quite similar. If you search for it, you might be able to find it.
  21. Are you using Vista or XP? If you're using vista, you need to set explorer to show hidden files and folders, then go to the following location and backup the 'savegames' folder: C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\
  22. Because of Rockstar's 'future proofing' unfortunately even those with the very highest spec PCs won't be able to play on the highest settings. You will be able to play at medium settings (with some things, such as render quality, texture quality and detail distance on high or max settings) which is about the equivalent of max settings on other games. Rockstar didn't include antialiasing and things still tend to pop up in front of you no matter what settings you choose though, so don't expect it to look the greatest.
  23. If the optimisation is as bad as chris82 says it is, then I doubt you'll be able to run it at all. That's not the most modern of PCs you've got there.
  24. Personally I don't think it matters. It will hit the rev limiter when the car has wheelspin, as it would in real life, but it doesn't really slow you down.
  25. I think you've all misunderstood what he's trying to say. He means that sometimes when you're in first gear, the car will hit the rev limiter for a couple of seconds before niko changes gear. Sometimes he can also be between gears for a while, but this could be down to a manual gearbox. The player may be controlling the car, but there is no option to shift gears manually, so that is done by Niko.
