Here's mine (although you may choose to have an AMD cpu/board combo):

ASUS P5S-MX SE Board

Intel Core2Duo E4500 2.2Ghz

Kingston ValueRAM 2x1GB

Western Digital 160GB Serial ATA

Any DVD drive

Any more and you might turn out to have a configuration similar to mine... :lolbounce:

Hmm... Is it cheap? :P

All of them are good, I'll just have to think.

that one is pretty good value, but you'l wanna add at least a 8600gt or equivalent ati card if u want decent gaming.

cant find p5s , but p5n-mx = $58

core2 e4500..cant find that either, 4600 2.4ghz = $127

2gb kingston ram ddr800 = $48

wd 160gb sata = $49

20x IDE Samsung DVD-RW = 25

= $307 AUD / £143 / €181

with a 8600gt its $370 AUD / £172 / €218

what power supply do you have currently? depending on what you get, you might need to upgrade.

There really is no point in getting dual 8800gts'. That card could probably run IV at 1680x1050 (22") on full anyway. By the time next year rolls around, lots will have changed. Intel has announced the architecture for it's larabee chips not too long ago, so i have a feeling Nvidia will be putting out some mean cards to try and stifle them, likelihood is that the competition will lower prices, too.

This is damn cheap, but still quite nice...

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400 (cpu)

Abit A-N68SV (mobo)

Corsair xms2 2x1gb (ram)

Nvidia 8400GS (gfx)

Samsung 250gb HDD

Any DVD drive

Any case

That's come out to under 200GBP, but obviously you might want more power. :)

That'd be like as crap as you can get :P

I mean, really, a 8400 GS :P There isn't a weaker card on the market that I know of.

I'd take some Asus mobo with a E8400. Stock cooler should be enough for you. Add a HD4850, 600 Watt PSU from a good brand (like coolermaster), normal ATX case and go for some 800 MHz mem, 4 gig, 4 modules.

Remember, you won't be upgrading the CPU. Nehalem will be coming end of this year, so quite some LGA 775 CPU's will go EOL.

Now that's just a quick idea. If you wish, I could come up with a list of all the stuff you need with links to all of them and full specs ect. But that's only on demand, cause I don't want to just waste my time on something you aren't ever going to read.

Why not try OC'ing your current PC

He's having problems....

Wait, don't get a 8400 or 8500 GT, they're not gaming cards. Get a 8600 GT or better if you want to run GTA IV on high.

8600 GT is a 1,5 year old midrange card that wasn't even all that great. I wouldn't advise him to get that, he'd be much better off getting a 9600 GT or one of the new 48xx cards from ATi.

@Llama: I actually don't think Intel will be able to pull off Larabee (first gen at least) right. They'll have difficulty entering the market. But who knows...

ATi has struck gold though. Thought the R700 would flopp too, but it turns out to be great. I mean, 150 EUR for better then 8800 ULTRA performance, that's great.

Though on the other hand.. G80 seems so far away... yet peformance is still pretty close to it's level. Shame nVidia couldn't succeed in making the GT200 like the G80 was.

Oh, and OP, make up your mind which party you want to support. I support nVidia, obviously, and I really regret not taking a mobo that could do SLI.

I love the mobo I have, really. But then I wanted to buy an extra card and then it hit me. I can't effin do it.

Anyway, saves me a PCI slot though. Wouldn't have place for my soundcard if I'd add another card (dual slot).

Oh, and do not get a X-fi soundcard! It's great, when it works... But mine just gives me problems, so don't take the risk and just go for something else.

Think about it Jace, he's going cheap. An X-fi is unnecessary expense if you're wanting cheap. Most decent mobo's now have a good quality 7.1 support built in. I know the 8400 is a balls cad, but i was just trying to se a platform to work with, start off low, then he can add shit according to his budget, not going uber than having to 'shave' parts off.

On a lighter note, my DVD drive appears to be completely fucked. Takes about 30 minutes to recognize COD4 now, and that's after i've rebooted the computer, and had to put the disc in beforehand (oh yeah, it's that bad)

As well as needing that, I'd like another 2g of ram. Planning to double up on GFX cards in the not too distant future too. Christmas probably.

For 650 EUR (which is very cheap) you can actually get a pretty powerful computer these days.

P45 mobo's are availible for just 100 EUR. Then get a HD4850 for 135 EUR and a E7200 for 95EUR and 4GB of mem at 800 MHz for just 80 EUR.

There. All you need to add is a PSU and you've got a powerful computer for a budget price. That's just 500 EUR for all of that. And and a case if you want one..

Just tell me how much you're willing to spend and I'll see what the best is you can get for that money.

If you've got 600 EUR (that'd be 650 USD effectively) availible to spend, this is about the best you can get and you can do some serious gaming on this too.
