  1. Happy 4th of July to our American visitors. To help you celebrate escaping from the glorious British Empire, Rockstar have released a couple of high definition artworks. They're not new, we saw lower resolution ones many weeks ago, however we now have much higher resolution full widescreen versions of Lamar, and Jimmy and Tracey.

    v_lamar_th.jpg v_jimmy_th.jpg

    Lamar - Jimmy & Tracey

In addition, we've updated our GTAV artwork page with these and a couple of older ones we'd forgotten to add before.

After a few weeks with no new GTAV info, Rockstar have posted up a new Asked & Answered article featuring questions that fans have put to them in recent weeks. If you can't be bothered to read through the questions and answers, here's an extremely brief summary of them:

    • You can't go and find the other two characters you're not playing as and kill them as this would be retarded, but you can assault them and put them in hospital if you wish.
    • Vehicle customisation is "very deep" and there are a "range of weapon upgrades".
    • Differences between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions should be negligible - you probably won't be able to tell any difference.
    • PS3 version ships on one disc and will require an 8GB install.
    • 360 version ships on two discs; disc 1 will contain a one-time mandatory 8GB install, while disc 2 will be used to play the game.
    • We'll be seeing some GTAV gameplay "soon".
    • Rockstar are still keeping quiet about the release of a PC version. (We think it's blatantly obvious the PC version will be released 6-12 months after the console versions, though.)
    • Rockstar once again confirm that GTAV's multiplayer is called "Grand Theft Auto Online" and that we'll get details on it "soon".
    • In Grand Theft Auto Online, you should have a better playing experience with regards to cheating dickheads ruining games.
  3. gtav-ps3-bundle.jpg

During Sony's conference at E3 tonight, a GTAV console bundle exclusively for the PS3 was announced. The bundle contains a 500GB PS3 console, a copy of GTAV, a GTAV branded headset with a dedicated GTA sound scheme, and 30 days of PlayStation Plus. This package will be available on the same day the game is released, September 17th, and will cost $ 299 in the US. We'll let you know if any further details come through such as international availability and pricing.

We're not sure how many people are still in the market for a current-gen console, especially with the PS4 and Xbox One releases imminent, and $ 299 does seem a lot for an old console, but nevertheless this will be available for those who want it.

  4. IPB Image Rockstar have today released a much needed update to Grand Theft Auto III for iOS. Version 1.30 of the game adds features that many players have hoped would be added, myself included. The full change log is as follows.

    • iPhone 5 widescreen support
    • iCloud save game support for seamless progression across all your iOS devices.
    • Custom playlist support*
    • Various stability and bug fixes.
*To create a custom playlist, create a playlist in iTunes titled “GTA3”

iPhone 5 support and iCloud save games and sync support are an extremely welcome additions which we're sure many players will be happy about. Two other noticeable yet unmentioned fixes include a slightly refreshed app icon, as well as this they have finally fixed the name of the app, which now correctly says "GTA III". Lovely stuff.

You can update GTA III right now from the App Store on your devices, or from iTunes. If you don't already own a copy, here's a link to the iTunes store page, it'll currently set you back just $ 4.99 (£2.99 / 3,99 €).

  6. Rockstar have released some official wallpapers featuring artwork of the three characters that were originally seen recently after the release of the latest trailer. These artworks are expanded a little offering more detail, and are of course available in a multitude of resolutions to suit any device you might use. Check them out below in full size, or head over to the Rockstar Downloads page to grab them in different resolutions. You can also check out our own GTAV artwork page to see all the stuff released so far.

According to Rockstar we'll be seeing more artwork in the forthcoming weeks.

Expect to see more GTAV digital artwork released as widescreen desktops in the weeks ahead, including official version illustrations of some friends, family members and other known associates of our three main characters

  7. I thought Sleeping Dogs was a great game actually but yeah the handling of the vehicles took some getting used to, surprisingly different from GTA.

But yeah I thought GTA IV's vehicle handling was pretty decent and don't understand why so many people have a problem with it. Perhaps it's because I play a lot of racing games so I tend to find vehicles easier than others. I much preferred it to the older style, but found both really easy to pick up and get used to. The fact that GTAV's is described as friendlier (not sure what that actually means... more arcadey?) surprises me just because I didn't think there was anything that needed fixing about it. Glad they've said it's not dumbed down.

  8. We're at RapidSwitch now. And yeah I'm familiar with Hostgator. I got into the hosting game back in 2005 which I ran alongside TGTAP, but I didn't have any budget outside of advertising revenue brought in by this site, which was only enough to cover the cost of a cheap server back then. Struggled with that and couldn't dedicate enough time to it to take it seriously so it was never something I pursued, but I still gained useful knowledge through doing it. Over the years I've managed a total of 11 servers (8 dedicated, 3 VPS) at a total of 8 different hosts around the world. I don't claim to be an expert on server management, I'm far from it, but I know everything that I need to know to get it optimised, secured, kept stable, and fix any problems that might crop up.

And yeah a 600K post forum shouldn't have too much of a problem running off a decent VPS. But this forum is one of the least intensive parts of this site as it's not particularly active right now, it's our downloads database that sees a massive amount of traffic compared to the rest of the site. When you're transferring that much data so quickly you need decent hardware and bandwidth. Also, bear in mind I also host GrandTheftWiki on the server, as well as a couple of other projects I have unrelated to GTA. So the server gets decent usage even if the whole thing isn't being used by TGTAP - it's not wasted if that's what you're thinking, and we've plenty of room to grow and expand :)

  9. You think a site a site as big as this can fit on a VPS? You're severely underestimating our size, a dedicated server is a minimum requirement, and we've been on several high-end ones since 2007.

Also, Cloudflare is good but it wouldn't have helped in this case. We were not under attack so their DDoS mitigation wouldn't have been of any use. The downtime was simply due to two consecutive hard drive failures. As for their caching methods, Cloudflare only shows cached pages in the event of an unreachable server, and for a limited time. Since the site was down for a whole week this would only have been effective in the first day.

Anyway, we actually silently migrated to a brand new server a couple of weeks ago and everything has been running smoothly since then. I've also taken extra measures to ensure we have nightly backups stored off-site in two separate locations. In the event of any future downtime due to hard drive failure, the most data we'd be at risk of losing is an absolute maximum of 24 hours. Unless this coincided with a big news/content update, this won't even be much of an issue. Point is, while we can't guarantee against hardware failure, we can now be extremely optimistic about recovery should anything untoward ever happen again, and we certainly don't expect downtime as long as that ever again.

  10. The latest issue of EDGE magazine is out with their GTA V preview, and in it are three new screenshots not seen in previews from earlier this week. The magazine pages have been uploaded in this GTAForums thread and we've included the new screenshots below.

There doesn't actually appear to be any substantial new information in the preview, though there are a couple of interesting points mentioned, including the fact that Franklin's descent from helicopter to ground took around 3 minutes to complete when Rockstar started the demo. We haven't done any maths around this but that should give you some idea of just how massive the game is. One other point that mag makes is that it claims a lot of character switching happens automatically, which is contrary to what other previews wrote, saying we would get quite a lot of freedom around when we choose to (or not to) do this. That said, they may just have been referring the particular mission Rockstar were demoing.

We'll update this post if we can get our hands on high res digital copies of these new shots.

  11. While the recent GTA V trailers, previews and screenshots have overshadowed pretty much every other announcement in the GTA scene this week (and quite rightly so), that's not to say there's nothing worth reporting on. A couple of popular modifications and tools received updates over the past couple of days too.

    multitheftauto.jpg

    MTASA 1.3.2 Released
First up is a new version of MTASA. That's the popular multiplayer modification for GTA: San Andreas for those of you who might be new to the franchise. MTASA 1.3.2 fixes a substantial amount of bugs, and also introduces useful new functions for those of you who make maps and create mods for the game. You can read more about that in their announcement post, or check their wiki for a complete list of changes.
The MTA team also announced that they will be switching to a rapid release cycle. The team currently pushes a new release every 3-6 months, this change basically means the team will aim to release an update every month, rather like the release cycles users of Chrome and Firefox web browsers will now be used to. The more frequent updates will mean less major changes in each iteration, but will allow for fixes and small feature updates to be pushed out a lot faster than before. In general this is pretty good news, the only downside can be the ridiculous version numbers we end up with.

    Download MTASA 1.3.2

    OpenIV 1.4 Released
IPB ImageGood news for those of you who make mods for Grand Theft Auto IV. GooD-NTS has released another update to his OpenIV tool, five years after the project originally started, and an update which will apparently be the last at least in terms of adding major new features.

The new features in this release are quite big indeed, though. The first is the ability to create your own unique animations for peds and objects, the second is the ability to create completely new custom cut-scenes. Other new features include an animation viewer for peds and objects, cutscene viewer, package installer (to make installing and distributing mods for GTAIV easier), new UI for the texture editor, and finally the ability to set file associations in Windows Explorer so you can open files directly in OpenIV.

    Download OpenIV 1.4

  12. Actually I think regenerative health is ok if done well, I think MP3 did it well and from the sounds of this I think GTAV will too, so I think 50% is fine. I am sure they will have done a lot of testing between 10% and 100% to see what worked best and settled on 50.

  13. Assholes for bringing back stuff you wanted?

When are you going to kill yourself? This is the first semi-positive thing you've ever said on this forum about R*/GTA. Then you end it immediately. What is actually your problem? You're getting banned after your response btw so make it accurate.

  14. Cheers. Speed reading stuff ... bound to have a couple of minor mistakes.

IGN's article was terrible anyway, their standards are seriously slipping. They barely revealed anything about the game, compared to say CVG who posted tonnes of details, in fact it's where most of our summary is taken from.

  15. Today's previews and screenshots have now started to surface. You can see all the new shots by scrolling to the bottom of this post, and below that are links to all the articles our summary of new information is sourced from (mainly CVG).

Summary of new information in today's previews

    Features / Gameplay

    • Car modding makes a return! Pay 'n' Spray's now double up as mod shops and offer the ability to swap out license plates, as well as provide performance upgrades and cosmetic options such as new spoilers, grilles, and window tints. Suspension and brake upgrades can also be carried out.
    • Weapons can be customised with laser sights, scopes, silencers, and high capacity magazines.
    • Property purchasing makes a return from Vice City - houses, garages and businesses can all be purchased as additional sources of revenue. Different characters will purchase different types of business.
    • Player customisation includes haircuts, tattoos and of course clothes
    • The in-game phone, iFruit, can be used to take pictures and upload them to Social Club or your own social media page.
    • The iFruit is a smartphone and even has its own apps: internet, contacts, social media, calendar, and a replay missions app. There are three more Rockstar hasn't yet detailed.
    • Activities you can do include stunt jumps, flying challenges, yoga, golf, tennis and bike races. You can also pick up hitch-hikers.
    • Side-missions also make a return. One example is where Michael must escort a starlet away from the paparazzi and back to her home in the hills.
    • It is possible to rob ATMs and liquor stores, presumably in a way similar to Vice City.
    • You can hunt the wildlife if you want to

    Combat

    • You can combat roll in and out of cover. There is also a "combat jog".
    • You have a better view of oncoming targets thanks to a wider, Gears of War-styled field of vision
    • You can run and gun fluidly while retaining control of the aiming reticule
    • The reticule changes from white to red when targeted at an enemy, and flashes an X when the enemy is dead

    Map / Environment

    • Rockstar say the land mass in GTAV is three and a half times the size of Red Dead Redemption, with the total play area becoming five times as big once you factor in the ocean
    • Wildlife spotted included deer and mountain lions
    • Fully explorable ocean includes "circling sharks, deep underwater ridges, schools of fish, a barnacle-encrusted wreck and shafts of sunlight shimmering through the water"
    • You can even dive for treasure (NPCs will do this too) but there are no waypoints, you'll have to explore yourself
    • The ocean has amazing wave physics, especially noticeable when boats speed past you
    • Some boats will include gear such as wetsuit, flippers and tanks for diving
    • The population of GTAV will be 5 times that of GTA IV
    • The geographic span of the map is massive. It contains mountains, rivers, lakes, military bases, farmland, desert, dense urban environments and more.
    • The game has a "crazy level of detail": You can board buses for a tour of celebrity homes, there are humourous film posters are on walls, men in costumes will accost you outside the Cathay Theatre, one character was Impotent Rage (like a "crappy version of Superman") and Space Ranger.

    Characters and Skills

    • Each character has a unique set of attributes: Stamina, Shooting, Strength, Stealth, Flying, Driving, Mechanic, Lung Capacity
    • In addition to the above, each character has a "Special". Special meters drain after use, and recharge slowly in the aftermath
      • Franklin: adrenalin junkie and can slow down time while driving
      • Michael: his own version of bullet time
      • Trevor: frenzy mode, where he's does double damage, takes half damage, and has a unique melee attack
    • The stealth skill suggests that you can use a stealth based approach to heists to draw minimal attention and perhaps walk away with a larger reward
    • The character selection wheel is split into four triangles: Franklin, Trevor, Michael, and your own multiplayer avtaar
    • Each character moves in a slightly different way, reflecting their different builds and styles
    • Google Earth style transitions between characters are very stylish. The screen fills with static and the camera suddenly moves from your character, to above him, to very high above him, and then in reverse to the character you are transitioning to. It is quicker if the player you are switching to is nearer.
    • Character switching can be done during cutscenes, manually, or automatically when AI takes control for you.
    • Although you can choose to switch when you want, in-game dialogue will suggest moments when it would be a good time to switch.
    • The relationship between single and multiplayer is much closer. You can quickly drop in and out of multipayer simply by pressing Down on the D-pad - Rockstar said more will be revealed on multiplayer in the future
    • Trevor has an ongoing feud with The Lost.

    Mission Details

    • Michael has an obsession with classic films and comes up with heists based on them, which are in turn based on real world movies.
    • The demo showed a mission entitled 'Blitz Play' - Michael organises a heist similar to the one he's seen in the GTA version of real life film Heat.
    • Mini heists are used as preparation. Players must secure vehicles, outfits, masks, getaway vehicles, and even a crew. Locations will also be needed for dumping evidence.
    • These smaller heists build up to a bigger heist. They'll require the right crew and players will have to decide between cheaping out and getting less skilled people, or paying more for highly skilled crew members that could result in a larger cut in the end.
    • Crew members, who include gunmen, wheelmen, technician etc. who survive the heist will continue through to the next one and receive a skill boost
    • Each of the three characters has their own job to do, it's up to you how much you want to do with each one.
    • If you die the game reloads to the last checkpoint, even if the other two characters are still alive

In the big ones, there can be no mistakes: you need the right weapons and gear; you need to choose the right approach, whether it's brute force, or stealth, and plan out your tactics via a pre-mission corkboard; and you need to have hired the right crew for the right job - that's crew in addition to Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Choose to pay less and you get less qualified personnel; pay more, and you get more reliable drivers, gunmen and technicians - but they take a bigger cut. It's a balance, and it's through missions like 'Blitz Play' that you find your best approach.

If you have an hour to kill, we recommend checking out CVG's preview on YouTube, it's basically more or less the same information that we've summarised here, but in greater detail. Press play and leave it running in the background.

The following publications have written previews of what they saw in the demo Rockstar showed them in the last few days:

Many non-English publications also have reviews, below is a comprehensive listing of them sorted by language.

  16. Here they are, three brand new trailers for GTA V. Enjoy!

Over 160 screenshots taken from the trailer have been added to our gallery. Some of these are referenced in our summary of what we saw in the trailers below.

    Analysis

    Michael

Michael's trailer shows how he is trying to maintain his and his family's luxurious lifestyle all while trying to manage his anger issues, which often come out in the form of some explosive scenes. Michael reveals he is "rich and miserable" as he talks to his therapist - something which doesn't appear to be working particularly effectively.

    • Song: Queen - Radio GaGa
    • Breast physics! Something that will surely excite the adolescent fans. We briefly see this with a girl dancing, and later a bikini-clad woman jumping out of the way of oncoming bikes. To be fair to the Rockstar devs, they actually bounce realistically and not in the exaggerated way you may have seen in the Dead of Alive franchise.
    • Michael drives a red Sentinel has a vanity plate that reads "KRYST4L" - interestingly his wife's name is Amanda and daughter is Tracy. Who Krystal is remains a mystery. In the opening scene, the Sentinel has a different plate.
    • We see a Securicar being smashed into by a tow truck which then crashes through a wall. This is most likely a cutscene, nonetheless we're still hopeful for some destructible elements in the environment.
    • Some brands we see are the Vapid car dealership, as well as the Vangelico jewellery store.
    • After the helicopter chase scene we see Michael crashing through a window and taking a hostage - this is likely the mission GameInformer saw in their world exclusive preview.
    • A victim is sniped and his corpse clearly shows an exit wound caused by the bullet.
    • The jet engines of a large aircraft (hopefully pilotable) are powerful enough to blast what appears to be a new model of police car up barrel rolling into the air.

    Franklin

Franklin's trailer shows him to have a completely different lifestyle to Michael's. He doesn't have the riches, but he certainly has the street smarts and knowledge of how to handle guns.

    • Song: Jay Rock feat. Kendrick Lamar - Hood Gone Luv It
    • First off we see a man cleaning a Buffalo which possibly has a slightly customised paint job. This could hint at some car customisation in the game, or may simply be a different model.
    • While Franklin's dog Chop is still the only dog we've had a proper look at (not counting the one on the beach in the first trailer), the man he is talking with (his friend Lamar) can clearly be seen holding a dog lead. We suspect dog ownership will be fairly commonplace.
    • A gangbanger shot in one of the following scenes also shows an exit wound to the side of his back.
    • In a helicopter chase, we get a glimpse of the helicopter cockpit. Cockpit view when driving vehicles is something that fans have been asking for ever since GTA III, whether or not we'll see this in all vehicles remains to be seen. It could just be part of this cutscene, or perhaps only an option when flying large aircraft where the "behind view" is somewhat obstructive due to the aircraft's size.
    • In the police chase this is part of we can definitely see improvements to lighting effects, and in many other scenes too.
    • Butts to gawk at.
    • Weapons attachments - the shotgun Franklin wields in this scene has a tactical light mounted to it - another indication of customisable weapons.
    • Fire animations look a lot better than GTA IV's and much more realistic.
    • Finally, it's worth pointing out that throughout the trailer we see an awful lot of green (Grove Street Families) and some purple (Ballas), as well as graffiti alluding to Grove Street. Some fans have been vocal on forums and Twitter hoping for a cameo from CJ and/or other characters from San Andreas. It is quite possible some less famous characters will make cameo appearances.

    Trevor

Finally, Trevor's trailer provides a lot a comic relief as he firmly cements himself as being a hilariously disgusting and psychotic maniac. Much of the noteworthy points have already been made while looking at Michael's and Franklin's trailers, but there are a couple of things worth mentioning in this one.

    • Song:
    • The Lost is confirmed to have a chapter in Los Santos. We see evidence of this in one of the first scenes where Trevor twats a Lost member round the face with a baseball bat. The unfortunate man is wearing a Lost jacket. The Lost logo is seen later on much more clearly in the background of this scene.
    • NPC's are shown to use their mobile phones to capture footage of Trevor's mental actions. It would be interesting if NPC's witnessed you committing crimes would call the police to your location, and if you could kill them before they were able to make the call...
    • More hints at car customisation with various vehicles in various scenes that appear to have some modifications when compared to their standard models.
    • We a see an old lady attempt to stop Trevor from strangling a man who is presumably her husband, by flailing her handbag at him. It's possible that NPC AI will cause them to react based on events happening nearby.
    • We get a much better look at those sexy new fire animations.

New artwork was also released today, featuring the three main characters.

So, which trailer was your favourite?

  17. Rockstar have updated the Epsilon Program website giving you an opportunity to join their enlightment seminar. What this actually is is a casting call where 5 lucky people will get their likeness put into the game! You have from now until the 27th May to enter, and you must be over 18 to do so. A similar opportunity was given to fans for Max Payne 3 last year.

    KIFFLOM_JOINUSINLOSSANTOS.jpg
Rockstar Games is holding a “casting call” event giving Grand Theft Auto fans an opportunity to be cast as one of five Epsilon Program members in Grand Theft Auto V. If you are chosen, your features will be used to create one of the five characters in the game.
