200,000 POST MILESTONE

We never count with ID numbers, as they contain loads of massive inaccuracies and holes big enough to drive a truck through. A post ID number is generated for every post and topic made, whether it is useful or not, bumped or not, a double post or not, deleted or not. They are never reused. The total post count is the actual count of posts that are in current circulation, and that number can go up and down.

"We have just over 200,000 posts on the forum", as opposed to "over 202,000 post ID numbers have been generated".

So you want to count every post that has been made, every post in the trash can, every post in forum fun and game, every post that has been merged into another and every post that has been completely deleted? That's a stupid way of counting.

The forum post count shows how many posts are on the forum - that is what we count. That number is 200,000 for a reason, and that is because there are 200,000 legitimate posts on the forum.

You know we don't use approval for posts/topics, and there aren't any atm that are invisible.

How is one member coming and spamming the hell out of here, then all his posts being deleted worth counting?

Erm, how is 202,206 closer to 250,000 then 200,000 :P

It's 2,206 posts closer. 202,206 is greater then 200,000 is it not? :P .

202,206 is 2,206 posts away from 200,000. 250,000 is 47,794 posts away from 200,000. We're closer to 200,000 then 250,000.

Next millestone is 250k, not 300k IMO. 1/4 of a million is pretty big y'know.

He meant 202,000 is closer to 250,000 than 200,000 is to 250,000.

You meant 202,000 is closer to 200,000 than 250,000.

We are at 200,079 posts NOT 202,000.

"Technically" 202,000 posts have been created on TGTAP forums. That is not something we measure because it counts all the things we don't want to count. The post count is the number of posts we have - that is the number on the front of the forums for a reason, because that is what we choose to measure.

This is nothing to do with a point of view - we are counting the number of posts (which is the post count nicely placed on the front of the forums). We aren't counting post ID numbers which you have to look at a URL to find out, because that's a totally different thing.

If a spammer makes a spam post - advertising viagra or something - should we count that towards our forum total? It counts towards the post ID number, because that HAS to be unique for the database to actually work properly. It doesn't count towards the post count because it isn't something we value at all. As a forum, not my opinion.

Oh and if you had read the moderators handbooks (which you should do since you're a mod) you would know we don't use invisible/unapproved posts.
