That's a good point actually. That is very realistic and still allows for you to travel from one airport to the next. But they actually said that we can't fly planes since there is only one city and nowhere to go. If there were going to be planes in the game then they would let us fly them. By not having planes they DO make savings in things like graphics and space, as well as time and effort. By having planes but not letting you fly them, they don't get the savings and they just upset all the players.

Hex code is fairly simple. You can use online converters or programs to do it the easy way, but if you want to actually understand it.... We count from 0 to 9. When we get past that we add 1 onto the digit before it. so 08 09 10, then that keeps going to 98 99 100. This is the decimal system, because there are ten numbers (0-9). Hexadecimal has 16 numbers instead of 10, so counts all the way up from 0 to 15 before adding a 1. But since we don't have a number to represent 10-15 we use the letters A-F. 00 01 02 03...08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F 11 12 13...18 19 1A 1B...1E 1F 20 21..98 99 9A..9E 9F A0 A1..FE FF 100 So Hex 10 is actually 16 in decimal. Hex 50 is Dec 80. Hex A0 is 160, like 16-ty (ninety, tenty, eleventy etc), AA is 170. F0 is 150 (fifteen-ty) and FF is 255. Dec 256 is Hex 100. You can work out decimal by starting with units on the right, then lots of ten, then lots of a hundred. so 436 is 6 units, 3 tens and 4 hundreds. To convert hex to decimal, the first digit on the right is units, then lots of 16, then lots of 256. So 436 is 6 units, 3 sixteens and 4 256s = 1078 Hex is used because its a shorter way of saying large numbers. FF is shorter than saying 255, but they add up to the same. Using two decimal digits, you can get a range of 100 numbers (00-99), but using two hex digits you can get a range of 256 numbers (00-FF). You should also notice that 256 is a nice round number because you can double "1" 128 times to get to it, so its a number that's easily found in binary, decimal and hex. To convert hex to decimal, you can use the calculator built into windows. Go to "view" and choose "scientific". Click the hex button on the top right to type in some hex, then when you click Dec it will change it to decimal, and vice versa.

I had to put something or else it wouldn't draw the line at all - figured 0.1 of a plane wouldn't be very useful. A tenth of a plane is like a wing or something...
-
That's a very helpful diagram MrLlamaLlama - although for those of you less visual, here I offer a mathematical f() = function to find the number of planes X = GTA IV f(X) = 0 In even simpler terms... Number of planes = 0 Here's a little graph as well:

I'd be inclined to say that its targeting something behind you. If you look behind CJ and hold down the target button, you'll notice he points one gun up and one gun down (if dual wielding). I havent tried any significant script mods for SA, so I don't know what would make him look backwards every time you target. Try targeting on someone directly in front of you, just so you can figure out where exactly the problem is.
-
That's exactly right. Some people still refuse to believe there will be no planes. Makes me think they don't trust Rockstar. I do.

That error message seems to say that there is no carcols data for the Alpha. So open carcols.dat with notepad and look for the line for the "alpha" car. If it isn't there, make sure alpha isn't spelt incorrectly or anything (not forgetting that it has to be called Alpha, you can't pick any name you want). If you still can't find it, put this line in (all on one line) just below the "admiral" line, right at the top of the car list. alpha, 58,1, 69,1, 75,77, 18,1, 32,1, 45,45, 13,1, 34,1 Check if that works, let us know if it doesn't.

Um... yes there is lots of doubt that there will be planes. Like the VP of Rockstar specifically saying that there won't be... kind of a clue, y'know? People who say there will be hidden planes or that Rockstar are just joking/lying are really not facing up to the fact that there won't be planes in the game. Get over it. If it turns out that there is a plane, then that's an added bonus, but there is nothing to say that there will be.

That's pretty good - nice find.

In the magazine they said they didn't want to do a rag-to-riches storyline but more of a rag-to- where you want to be storyline. That sounds to me like you're trying to trick yourself into believing there will be planes in GTA IV. You want them so much you're in denial... But yes of course Rockstar have made the right decision for the right reasons. I bet you they had big long discussions for weeks about taking planes out - probably fights in the boardroom about it. But they took them out for a reason
-
I don't think taking over the entire city is going to be an option in the game - because it is made assuming that you don't use cheats. They certainly wouldn't make it so that people who did cheat got a better end result than those who did not.

That's just my interpretation of the persistent push of the "realism" aspect of GTA IV. They said specifically that the police are going to be on your tail a lot more, and that you won't get away with as much as you do in existing games. That means you can't just gun down fifty people, steal a car and drive off then the police stop chasing you a couple of minutes later and nothing ever happens to you. It is going to be much more of a challenge to get anywhere in GTA IV, and pretty much impossible to take over the city. Although, this entirely structure-free gameplay (where you do any missions you can get your hands on) means you may be able to hit the sweet spot and take over - although not in the same sense as GTA Vice City. They said that not having planes would also be a lot more realistic, implying that you can't just do whatever you want.
-
There aren't really any total conversions for San Andreas... not that have been completed anyway. What has viewing yourself in a plane got to do with a TC mod?
-
I admit that I am slightly disappointed - I did (and still do) enjoy flying planes in SA. However, think about how realistic it is to be able to walk into an airport gate (which opens for you) get in a plane, fly it round, land in a street and walk off. They mentioned that the Police will be a much heavier force in GTA IV, and I expect that it will be a lot harder just to get in someone else's car and drive off. So with planes, it is unrealistic for this random eastern European guy to obtain a pilot's licence and be able to get in any plane he wants. In the article, it describes him being in a house that is not his own, and having to be really stealthy about it. That is how I think we will have to play GTA IV. We will not own this city, we won't be exempt from the law just because we did a few missions for a gangster. We're going to have to work for everything we have in GTA IV.

I could just give you the entire handling.cfg file to see if that worked..? But yeah you'll have to downgrade again if you reinstall. And don't forget to backup this time.
-
I think the only people that would have that would be Rockstar, and they don't give up their secrets very easily (I've tried) Most of them are DFF and TXD files for vehicles (with the vehicles name), and most of the rest are TXD files for buildings and other such things. Although, I believe that TXD Workshop can go through IMG files too - so you can quickly skip through all the files and see what the textures are, so you should be able to tell what most of them are. Problem is, there's millions.
-
Most building mods are simply textures - so you do it a bit like cars. You open gta3.img with IMG Tool, and replace some .txd files (textures) with the ones given to you in the mod (they'll have the same names). If the mod comes with some .dff files, do the same with them. Any big map mods will have to start editing the map files, which should be detailed in the README that comes with the mod. Trains should be exactly the same as other vehicles (with the engine and carriages separate), but remember that they always live on the tracks, so you can't spawn trains in front of you (using cheats or a trainer) or the game will crash. Downgrading is fine, because it is for the purpose of modding the game, and doesn't directly compromise the game's security. Actually, we shouldn't give help for PS2 modding, because that requires the user to create "backup" copies of the game, which can easily be given to other people (which is piracy). For those people that want a free copy of the game, remember that we're the people paying for the next GTA, you are refusing to pay those people who are working on it. If you guys all paid like you were supposed to, maybe that game would be even better.

A script mod is one that changes the main.scm file - something that changes the missions - you can't use savegames for a different/edited main.scm - you have to start a new game (from the beginning) and use that as the savegame. If you did install something like that, this should work. If not, it's probably just a bad mod installation you did. Check you put those numbers I gave you in right - make sure they're all on one line and that you put then where they're supposed to be (replaced the old lines, not just added the ones I gave you).
-
I suppose the upside of it is that they have more time/effort/space for other features - and if you never see the whole city from the air, then it doesn't have to load things quite as far away. Don't forget we have quite a few experienced and talented modders in the GTA community........
-
Technically yes you should go buy the magazine. But that's what they get for giving it to one person (well one that we know of) before everyone else - if they had waited until release day then we would have all gone down to the shops and bought it. If I could have bought that magazine today, I would have. But now we have to either get the screenshots off the Internet, or wait until next week until we can buy it ourselves. No way am I gonna buy it now. Knowledge supersedes copyright.
-
If the game doesn't load, that means that you failed to install the mod correctly. If you have version 2 of the game (if you bought it recently) then you will not be able to mod the game without downgrading to version 1. Uninstall the mod - put the backup files (that you SHOULD have made) back and then downgrade. If you didn't backup, reinstall then downgrade to v1.

Read my writeup of the details in the article if you want to know everything that can be known at this stage. Liberty City in GTA IV will be smaller than San Andreas, but none of it will be "wasted" space as desert/forest/countryside - its just one big-ass city. That is why planes will not feature, because simply there is nowhere to go. It's not that you can walk into every single building, but the game has improved massively in terms of detail, rather than size. Things such as potholes and rubble in the streets, totally different houses and immensely varying pedestrians.

In the video settings, make sure "frame limiter" is turned on, otherwise your PC will run the game as fast as it possibly can, without limiting itself to the proper FPS. You would turn this off if your PC couldn't cope with the normal FPS, and needed it to go much slower.

A few common misconceptions there. Firstly, there are several different types of "gay". Some guys are really feminine and flamboyant and "oh my GAWD have you seen this wallpaper?", some guys are really openly sexual with leather and stuff, and others (like me) just like guys instead of girls. Actually being women inside has nothing to do with it, that's a separate problem. I like being a guy, I like guy things and I like guy things so much that I like guys - that's the only way I can explain it. For some reason, women just don't turn me on. Apart from that, I'm entirely normal. The feminine ones are the only gay guys you notice cos you can tell. Even after I came out, people still didn't believe I was gay and that I was making it up (can't think why I would).
