The Most ANNOYING Ad Ive Ever Seen!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. So heres what happened, I was replying to a topic and then... It happened. It redirected me to a page that looked like the Windows XP 'My Computer'. It scanned it and it said "WARNING: Your computer has software with Trojans and Malware! Please download the (name of program) to delete all of them!" Then it kept coming up a thing to download and I didn't want to and I was getting annoyed and whenever I clicked the back button it would reload to where I was then 5 seconds later it would redirect me back there and like a million pop-ups to download there 'product'. Is there anyway to stop this "ad" because that was hell. It wasted 5 minutes of my life!

It's spyware. Was this on TGTAP? If so it needs to be sorted out ASAP so let me know.

If it was off some other site then this is in the wrong section. If you use Firefox then download an addon called AdBlock Plus and ensure the URL of the popup is blacklisted.

EDIT: Sorry I misread. So yeah. What topic were you replying to at the time?

You know I had a similar problems with ads on the forums. When ever I post in Fast Reply, this stupid Pizza Hut , Caroline , Orphan(Movie) , and Shaving Cream advertisement keeps popping out when I try to post. Plus, it pops out of no where when I'm reading some of the other posts too. Some of the ads can't be removed because there is no X. :(

If you must use IE then at least upgrade to version 7 or 8, preferably 8. Only today I revised our Anti-IE6 message to get rid of this crappy browser. It wastes too much of my time trying to support it so like many web 2.0 sites out there we're dropping support, and new features on TGTAP will require you to not use it.

IE6 users currently see the website like this:

I got a question... I've been on here with no ads on my mothers computer. And at the homepage that you are talking about Chris. There is just a big empty spot where the ad is suppose to be. It looks kinda stupid. No offense, your web mastery is awesome.

Guys can you do me a favour and print screen the ads because it's a lot easier for us to point out the malicious ones and get them stopped from showing.

@Husky: Yeah I've had that myself sometimes. I do use AdBlock but not on TGTAP as I need to see that ads are displaying. I think it's just that based on your location and the content on the site there is nothing relevant to show, or something like that. I don't know, I don't serve the ads.

That's the beauty of Adblock, although some complain that they're losing revenue due to blacklisted ads. Yet, it does the job of getting rid of the really unwanted ones.

lol, nice. Is there a way to put that in PHPBB3, so that users in my forum browsing on IE6 and earlier will be advised to upgrade?

Sure, it's just HTML. Check the source code. The bit you need is:

<!--[if lte IE 6]>
<div id="ie6notice"><strong>NOTICE:</strong> Internet Explorer 6 was released in August 2001 and is now severely out of date, insecure, and doesn't work properly with modern websites. Please upgrade to a better browser.<br />
<div id="otherbrowsers"><img src="/images/icons/ie6-firefox.png" alt="" border="0" /> <a href="http://www.getfirefox.com">Firefox</a> <img src="/images/icons/ie6-opera.png" alt="" border="0" /> <a href="http://www.opera.com">Opera</a> <img src="/images/icons/ie6-safari.png" alt="" border="0" /> <a href="http://www.apple.com/safari/">Safari</a> <img src="/images/icons/ie6-chrome.png" alt="" border="0" /> <a href="http://www.google.com/chrome">Chrome</a></div>
Need to stick with Internet Explorer? <img src="/images/icons/ie6-ie8.png" alt="" border="0" /> <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/">upgrade to the latest version</a>
</div>
<![endif]-->

Obviously you'll need to write some CSS for it to display correctly. But just put that wherever you want the message to appear. Don't hotlink my browser icons though.

@geran: Thanks. No idea what the hell is causing to display in that position. Is it just that particular ad, or every one?

wow lol.

yer i had heaps of bad ads like this on IE...

it was so bad that when i started up the computer, straight away like, half a trillion IE popups would come up and the computer would just lag like a bitch. So i had to use some random thing (XPLite) to literally remove internet explorer from Windows. that was the only way to fix it other than reformat.

Firefox+AdblockPlus , i've never seen an ad since then.

Makes you kinda glad that windows 7 dont come with IE installed or any crap like that ehy ;), i think more ads are attracted to IE more as its the most used apparently, but it's crap FF is the one true good browser, i laugh at MS, *Geran gos to start menu, hmm I IE as a last resort, WTH IE and IE 64-bit, wat the f is the point in this, no difference :o* plus a lot of site run crap on the new IE :D

Edit: Tak a look at this chris, this is gettinig worse:

OK, added. I did use your stylesheet, with a few modifications of course. This is to make sure that kids won't end up seeing BS while trying to browse safe.

@geran30: but you do know that IE is optimized for 7, IE in windows 7 runs faster than any other browser, but only in 7.

For the ads, yeah, whenever i read a topic a safecount.net survery pops up outta nowhere.

Yeah but for some reason the webpages run smoother in FF than they do in IE, plus i acctuly can't stand IE any more cos of its lack of features and the fact it isnt that smooth, the ad appears to be behaving itself this morning, good. Hmm but then again for how much longer ;).
