Vercetti Thug
I've read a few articles on Conficker, set to happen on April 1 2009, and I have to ask: Is this a prank? For more details on Conficker, try wikipedia or a google search. Am I at risk?
Husky
No shit its a prank, looking at the date is a no brainer. Its similar to that DTV bullcrap with the " Your regular basic cable might cut off ". Then all of a sudden they delayed it. Then you see no more DTV commercials. So its a prank. Never believe what some people on the internet say. Vercetti Thug
Microsoft acknowledges this "prank" and have released a security update for this (which i doubt actually works).
Chris
Obvious April Fools joke.
Hansui
yeah, its an april fools joke, but my mother was alerted by this... well that's not surprising because April Fools is virtually unknown here in the Philippines
Sherman
Obvious April Fools joke. In the future, I'm going to be lol'ing because that's what the creator wanted everyone to think

Gerard
Assume it's a REAL virus that will activate itself and kill everyones computers. Normally we would fix it with virus scans, updates etc. However, if we think it's fake, a lot of people won't bother. April Fools Day is the perfect cover - even Chris just said it is obviously fake, so assuming he was in charge of a big company, he might not bother patching the vulnerability, and if it's real you're in the shit. As Sky said, the creator WANTS everyone to think it is an April fools joke so that they don't protect against it, and he wins. This is the same with ANY news that happens on April 1st, everyone assumes it's fake, so that is when companies announce a lot of (real) bad news, so people deliberately ignore it. Alvas.
That's probably a fake news but it would lulz if you guys would alert about it when april 1 comes near saying its true....
Spaz The Great
Microsoft seems to believe it exists? I MIGHT patch against it. Might be too lazy.

EvoLuTioN
Just get the latest windows and antivirus database etc update. I had a downadup attack last month, Not taking chances, Nothing bad is going to happen if you take a bit of extra precautions. :/ Edited March 27, 2009 by EvoLuTioN
Chris
Well if it is real then your computer deserves to be torn apart for not having adequate protection. Hopefully it'll only attack users of Norton because they're the ones who generally deserve to get virus attacks for being so ignorant.
MrLlamaLlama
I don't see what people have got to lose by patching anyway, tbh. It takes like 30 seconds at the most. Better to be safe than sorry. Then, all I can do is hope AVG does me proud

EvoLuTioN
Avg/Avg Free has worked without any problems for me so far. Been Using it for about 2 years now. Avast is a good one too.

Oh wise one, which Anti-virus doth thou proclaim winnar? I don't. But I recommend one of the following: AVG, Kaspersky, or Avast. But in most cases as long as you're not using any software produced by Symantec or McAfee you're fairly well protected.

Vercetti Thug
Okay, im sorry guys. I assumed all you internet geniuses would know about Conficker instead of speculating. Since most of you were too lazy to google, here's a brief explanation minus the technical stuff i'd never understand: Conficker has allegedly affected millions of computers and is set to go off on April 1 when all those computers (estimated to be about 14 million) will be linked together into a "Frankencomputer". Obviously, I was skeptical, but the article made sure to cover the points. I didn't believe it after that still, so I went to microsoft and sure enough, they're frantically trying to find the author of this virus (250,000 USD as a bounty for information!). I say we gear up for the worst. I have Spybot and AVG Free 8.0. Can anyone give me a reliable link to a FREE security program that will nearly assure me protection? Greatly appreciated.
