  1. Yea okay, Windows has its problems. Its insecure, volatile, annoying, slow, and American. But lets face it, Windows XP Pro is the greatest Operating System around The difference between Windows and Linux? WINDOWS ACTUALLY DOES STUFF Linux is more secure (it doesnt have many features, so it can block 99% of holes). Linux runs faster (cos it doesnt do anything). On most Linux OS', as Chris found out, you can't run many of the applications Windows users take for granted: MS Office, Games (including GTA), music and DVDs (often fucks up). Why the hell run a Linux operating system if you cant use the basic tools and features of modern PCs, then why the hell run it. Well the main use of *nix systems is that of web servers. Linux systems are ideal for this. They are secure, so they dont get hacked. They dont run useless programs, like animated WIMP interfaces (eg: explorer.exe), cos you dont need it - you just run a nice simple WHM/cPanel application which should do everything you need to. More complex things can be done though SSH (equivalent of DOS). Linux is a simple, empty, secure operating system that can be built on to do any one specific job. Looking fancy and being a multimedia powerhouse is usually not one of them. Mind you, there are some very slick interfaces, especially in the login system, and (as Chris has demonstrated) its pretty fun to find an alternative to something we automatically hate with no real reason. Anyway, why does everybody seem to hate Microsoft? Truthfully, where would you be if you wilfully removed every trace of Microsoft Corporation from your house and office? Well a VB.net CD case is holding up my computer desk, so i'd be fucked if that went. Both my PCs (usually) run XP, but wherever possible i use MSN Messenger (DIE AIM), WMP10 (Winamps shit) and MS Office, which is the only really decent Office Suite (Sun Star Office, its clone Open Office, and Microsoft Works (!) don't come close). Apart from IE6, i back Micosoft products all the way. What do we use on our DC? Windows Server 2003. A few good reasons not to use Linux are cos you cant have WMP, MS Office, MSN or play games. There are workarounds, but its not worth the hassle - you'll end up breaking your system, or making it slower and less secure than Windows. Just use XP, and be happy. One reason many turn to Linux is got they get bored of XP - Why not skin it (use TuneUp Utilities NOT WINDOWS BLINDS!!), change the logon screen (TUU again), get some fancy desktops and screensavers, and enough decent apps (Firefox, San Andreas, MSN, Photoshop, Unreal Tournament, 3DS Max) to keep you through the summer. EDIT: Yes, it is 4:14 AM
  2. Forum Security is a new user group with administrative privilaeges, whose main job it is to rid the forums of n00bs and bad posts. We regulate the member warning system, and enforce the rules. The idea came about because admins don't have enough time to dedicate to protection, cleanup and discipline, especially cleanup. Couple of weeks ago, some idiot decided to register with 20-odd accounts and a handful of bad posts, all from different proxies and therefore different IPs. Only myself, spasmodially insane, and sky^ were there to prevent it. The most we could do, as moderators (sky = super mod) was to suspend each account he made, and delete any posts he made. We noted his IP addresses until Millermagic came on and let us into the admin CP to ban his ass. Forum Security is the answer to this - a select few members will be given this job, so there will be 24-hour access to somebody with heightened permissions and responsibility. Of course Chris cant give admin access to all mods, so it is a tricky situation, and we think this should help. Its also near enough to one month since the new warning system was implemented. Upon review, we have found that the six-star warning system was slightly inefficient, with warnings being at 17/33/50/67/83/100 %, and each warning not quite constituting a block on the chart. We have changed it for there to be five warnings, of 20/40/60/80/100 %, which is one block on the display. We are also in the process of replacing the blocks with wanted stars. Hope that answers everything
  3. We've heard good things and bad things about this skin, so tell us your views Please note the banner is TEMPORARY
  4. I think Muad'dib is a character in 'Dune', this series of books/films etc that he's become obsessed with recently To be honest, i preferred 'mvi'
  5. Jay, Linux is a type of operating system, the main PC alternative to Windows. Its generally good features are low performance wastage, simpler designs, and some open source versions (Fedora Core). Most web servers run on linux.
  6. av: 9/10 - this dudes got moves sig 1: 7/10 - lots of work but too little contrast, cant see the creature sig 2: 7/10 - not too complex but quite a nice effect - i want that font!! personality: hardworking and probably pretty wild
  7. Okay take deep breaths, thats right, have a paper bag, breathe into that, slowly. There, thats better. You say you've beaten SA 40 times, then you would have done this mission at least that many times, plus failed attempts, so you should have no bother. Lying isnt good. Not sure how many aliens have PS2s, and even then do they use NTSC or PAL? Are they old enough to play?
  8. Kent Paul is just such a hilarious spakker. I would love to see him ingame yet again. Shame we're not likely to, with the GTAIII trilogy now over
  9. I see your point, but i dont see any reason why Rockstar would choose Seattle / Washington over the dozens of other potential sites. Yes okay its a living breathing city with a few good things in it probably, although probably not much unique stuff. Anyway, its not for us to dictate, they'll already know where its gonna be.
  10. never noticed that Yea theres tons of references to the previous games in San Andreas, such as Ken Rosenberg, Kent Paul, Dwane and Jethro, the forellis etc Just makes you realise how well thought out these games are.
  11. Lies, all lies. As of yet we dont know where its gonna be set. GTA III was based on New York, so it isnt going to be just NYC. Although it could have NYC as part of it, we doubt that cos they did it a few years ago. But we know that it will be on Earth, space just would not fit the game at all.
  12. That is correct, however miami itself is a landmark - miami beach. It wouldnt work in the above paragraphing (if i said miami beach...) so i left it out. As for statue of liberty in NYC, i didnt say that all GTA games were based around landmarks, but New York City was mentioned, anybody could say a lot of things, thats my point - its a famous and popular city. As for Seattle, no offence, but i cant think of anything to do with it. Maybe a US tourist attraction i'm not aware of, maybe it has filmstars, festivals, or music. I really couldnt tell you. I think a GTA game should be built around something a bit more memorable, like Lithuania... space needle - looks a bit like vice's ATC tower, doesnt it
  13. space needle? Is that some sort of tower? If you say "golden gate bridge" anybody would say SF If you say "statue of liberty" anybody would say NYC If you say "Hollywood" anybody would say LA If you say "casino" anybody would say Vegas If you say "Big Ben" anybody would say London If you say "Eiffel Tower" anybody would say Paris If you say "Kyoto Tower" anybody would say Japan (although its in Kyoto...) I could not name one monument in Seattle, nor one claim to fame at all. Say Sydney to me, and i would be able to talk about the Opera House and Harbour Brigfe and stuff, although i've never even been close to it. I dont think Seattles famous enough. Do you live there or something?
  14. Nice bump there hit em up Nice suspension there hit em up
  15. overheating is good... okay no its not. If CPUs didnt overheat, there wouldnt be any arkward heatsinks or noisy CPU fans. Maybe even the PSU would only supply power. I think i'll invent a cool CPU
  16. I have an Intel Celeron 2.6GHz in this laptop, desktop is being upgraded to a 3.2 Athlon
  17. Spaz, you say you have a 64 bit CPU, but do you have a 64bit OS to go with? Would make all the difference...
  18. did he just call me a n00b? yea okay its chris' phrase, but i still used it.
  19. That phrase is associated with you, but if you remember, I started off the 101 uses for a PS3 controller, and sumone said fridge door handle and sumone else said dildo, and you did the rest and coined it and i stole it.
  20. Everybody wants a dig at everybody elses stuff. If you dont like it, theres no need to get rid of it. If i was in government, i wouldnt ban pop music like 'Steps' or 'Westlife', tempting as it may be. Although it makes my life a misery, i know many strange people appear to enjoy it, and so i'd let it slide and have nothing to do with it. These censoring agencies and mothers who are looking for something else to campaign against dont like to play GTA - they evidently see it as cruel (to AI), evil (in VR) and giving people bad ideas (omg - guns - i would never have thought of using a gun to kill someone, i have loads and i didnt realise you could go round nick cars and kill people ) Cant they just leave us alone? We aren't causing any harm, just having fun. Would you rather we went out on the streets and did it for real because we cant do it nice and safely on a computer anymore. We need an outlet for testosterone! Sex isnt allowed (oh no, you'll get aids and stuff), beating people up isnt allowed (with the exception of Westlife), and now they want to stop us having a nice safe personal outlet. You all know what happens to people when their emotions are stored and well up inside them - they burst. If you hold it in, its gotta come out sometime, and usually painfully. Like constipation. If we dont let out our desires for passion through... personal intimacy, then people go out and rape others, especially in Cheltenham. If we cant release our violent side on a keyboard, mouse or fridge door with dildos for controllers, then we have to release it elsewhere. Like the neighbours cat, or the car at the end of the street, or the newly painted wall thats begging for a can of spray paint. Some have suggested that playing GTA games made some people kill others. Hmm, not quite true. This psychopath killed some cops, and then a passing mother blamed it on GTA. If these kids, probably 3 out of about 10 million who play GTA, cant control their feelings, and cant confine them to their bedroom, then they should be locked up. That doesnt mean they should roam free whilst an innocent-looking DVD with a vector Tenpenny on it should be locked up. And anyway, what would increasing the legitimate age for playing SA do? Make mothers more worried about their children? Make some people have to change a digit on their fake ID? Make you have to find somebody older to buy the game for you? All its gonna do is make GTA more arkward to get. Things then spiral out of control. It becomes taboo, so even more people want it. You cant get it through high street stores anymore until you're 18 or something, so back street shops (no not the backstreet boys) end up turning loose profits, selling broken copies, selling them to people half the required age for twice the price. Make them availible to everybody, yea, thats gonna gonna help the situation. As for the Hot Coffee mod, Rockstar did the right thing by disabling it, and effectively removing it from the game, but since it got forgotten about (its a minor thing, unimportant) it was left in the game for some h4x0r to find, like PatrickW, and turn it into a mod. Oh okay, so some kids found a way to make 'people' naked and perform thrusting actions upon one another. Oh no, the Sims doesnt do that. Oh no, Big Brother doesnt show that. They're just having another dig at something they dont like. Leave us alone, guys, and we wont shoot your cops, promise
  21. yea this avatar was made in my half an hour in photoshop, didnt like it though. I'll stick with fireworks, much simpler. Hey - i always used paint until i got fw. I know i havent used like any features, but this should be simple enough to make easily.
  22. we're behind you all the way nice bitchin'
  23. whoa - funny pink writing 8.4 inch sleepy sleepy 5am dude *yawns* - good morning, and welcome back
  24. I think London is a logical choice, without doing any unknown on obscure cities. But bear in mind that R* are changing the format of the game after the GTAIII trilogy, and San Andreas was a state not a city. Sizewise, London is too small (unless they did it lifesize instead of just making the mini cities you see), and i dont think they'd do the UK. It wont be all the way round the world either, nor will it be a continent. With SAs lack of loading screens, one large area is more likely thn several separate cities. This topic should be parts of the city topic, not its own topic, but london is a strong contender so i'll let it stay.
